Mr. and Mrs. Guy D. Clark entertained a party of friends from Indianapolis, Chicago and Hammond for the auto races at the Lake Co. Mrs. Wheeler served dainty refreshments Cards have been issued by Mrs. Harry Baker for a luncheon and bridge at her home on Saturday, October 7th. Mrs. Eugene Crowell has issued invitations for a dinner party on Thursday, October 2nd at her home on Joliet street. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Pavey who have been the guests of their daughter Mrs. John Wheeler for the past week returned to their home in Frankfort on Monday. Crown Point people were very much chocked on Tuesday morning to hear of the death of Richard Baid win, the seventeen year old son of Mr. end Mrs. J. J. Baldwin which occurred at his home on Monday evening. Though in rather poor GARY NEWS POLICE HUDSON CATCHES FIRE Slight damage was done to the high powered Hudson car of the Gary police department last night, when a short in the dimmers on the headlights caused a small fire. EXTRICATE HORSE FROM THE RIVER Firemen have ether duties apparently than fighting fires. Yesterday a horse got mired in the river near Massachusetts street and they were called to help get the animal out of the river. GARY STILL WET Although government dry agents have been trying to mop up Gary for several months and Gary po-lice have arrested hundreds of violators since the first of the year, there are still several favorite oasis over the city. On their rounds last night, patrolman found five drunks. E. H. MUNBELL SUED FOR $70.00 RENT E. H. Mundell is made defendant in a suit filed before B. J. Laube. a local justice of peace. The suit sets out in substance that Mm n dell Is Indebted to M. Ban in the sum of $70.00. The money, the complaint alleges, is back rent which the defendant has failed to pay. Mundell, who lives at 838 Virginia st., is employed at the Gary steel plant SANS LICENSE, BUT NOT BOOZE Garnie Mooreheal and Leon Grant f Chicago drive through Gary without a license. They were placed under arrest. When the machine was searched, it was found that the duet had a supply of booze in their possession. They were hooked for violating the state liquor law. WAGE SCALE [INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE] CHICAGO, Sept. 26 -- Assertions that the United States Railroad Labor Board had. In Its July 1st decision "which brought on the national shopmen's strike, set up a "counterfelt wage scale" were made today by D. W. Helt, president of the Signalmen's organization. In his plea for a re-hearing of the wage scale, which opened today. The present stage of industrial development demands that there shall be no harsh criticisms and violent methods," said Helt in his opening address. "The reactions to such measures are socialism and communism, and those principles have been shown to offer no practical relief. Changes in the present wage system are necessary to insure harmony and co-operation between employer and employe, which is necessary to industrial success. The board in its order effective July 1st set up a counterfeit wage scale." The July 1st order cut the signalmen's pay from between 53 and 80

THOUGHT KLAN WAS AFTER [INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE] CHICAGO, Sept. 26. -- Under the hallucination that he was about to be mobbed by the Ku Klux Klan. Theodore Gllroy leaped out of his bed today and fired five shots through the door in a local hotel, seriously wounding Miss Hanna Johnson, one of the hotel employes. "The Ku ' Klux K!an sent me threatening letters." Gllroy explained when he was taken into custody. "I thought, w4ien the knock came on my door that they were going to kill me." EAST CHICAGO MAN'S MIND IS SOUND After spending several days in the county Jail while officials expected word from the fhaane asyl-um at Logansport asking for his return, Tony Yamarocz of East Chicago is again free. Habeas corpus proceedings were held before Judge Crites in Room 2 of the Hammond Superior court yesterday afternoon. Sheriff W. H. Olds and Bailiff tonall Mets of the Hammond police court were named as defendants. Metz and Olds brought their man in. to court as commanded and explained that he was being held on orders of Chief of Police Bunde. Yamrocz, they said, had made the statement

OPEN JOB OFFICE The Twin City Sentinel of East Chicago which went into the hands of a receiver about a week ago, will operate as a job office until October 16th. Judge Crites (granted Receiver William Wright permission to keep the plant rolng long enough to finish a mumber of expensive jobs which were halted when the office was closed by court order. It is expected that about $400 profit can be realized from these Jobs. Only such new Jobs can be taken on during the period as can be finished in connection with the larger jobs. The receiver's petition was filed in room 2 of the Hammond Superior court yesterday along with an inventory of assets and liabilities. Airplane service is -being organized to connect the French ports of Havre ond Cherbourg with a fast train leaving Southampton , England, for London for the convenience of tras-Atlantlc passenesers desiring to visit he British capital. She recalled signing some paper before she left the court building. Mike Jursu. -was another witness. Mike trembled and appeared frightened as he took the stand. to the table at which the defendants sat. HARRIS APOLOGIZES Commissioner Surprise finally ordered him to cut out the running around and stay one place or the other. He said it looked too much like an attempt at intimidation of the witness. Harris apologized. The district attorney referred to the matter later and gave the information that Harris had represented Jursu in other matters and that his action in the court room were open to suspicion. Jursu was arrested by Gary police for liquor law violation. Lucas got bond for him and he hired him as attorney. No fee was spoken of but after it wss all over he charged $300. He said Lucas was to see that he didn't get a jail sentence. "That was the end of my case," he said. "Lucas said he would fix it up with Judge Dunn." MRS. ROSS WITNESS Jursu spoke fair English after he got over his fright and on crossexamination showed he could read English satisfactorily. Mrs. Bessie Ross, city clerk of Gary, was the government's last witness. She merely told of an incident in her office when -the ballots of the last election were being counted. Enough precincts were in to show that Judge Dunn had been re-elected. Lucas was there. He is said to have made th. statement: "Well, I have been called the king of the city court, and it I am still king of the city court." It was explained that Mrs. Rors was only one of a number who heard the assertion. Knowledge of It reached the ears of the federal men and she was subpoenaed as onr of the most credible witnesses that could be found in Gary. It was not a pleasant thing for her to appear
