Little Mex. With Big Gun Joseph Zano, Mexican, wasn't very big but he carried the differ-ence. He told the authorities when arrested that he linked at 732 Congress street, Chicago, and was here looking for work. He is being held in jail without bonds. Human Hearts at Hartley Remarkable for strength of story, acting and direction Human Hearts' the Universal-Jewel which opened at the Hartley theatre yesterday, stands forth as one of the greatest motion pictures seen here in many months. House Peters, the star, again proves his right to be termed one of the finest motional actors on either stage or screen today. "Human Hearts" is the story of family life in the Ozark Mountains. Peters is seen as Tom Logan, a simple-hearted on of the soil, who looks about the world with trustfulness and helpfulness. Auto Collision While attempting to turn around on the North Forspth avenue bridge the machine of Richard Davis of 4334 Northcotte avenue, East Chicago, was ran into by a car driven by Joe Varidy and partially wrecked late last night. CIGARETTE. IT'S TOASTED It's toasted. This one extra process gives a delightful quality that can not be duplicated Michael Menning. The home was made gay for the occasion with autum leaves and bouquets of fall roses. The delicious two count luncheon completed the very delightful afternoon. Mrs. Dickson received a number of very pretty gifts, together with the best wishes of her friends, for many more happy birthdays. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brown of North Magoun avenue spent Sunday with friends in Chicago. William Dickson and Roscoe Baer spent last Saturday and Sunday with relatives and friends In Monon, Ind. GARY HAS (BY SPIKE.) It took Pete Carres. Indiana's youngest fight promoter to show 'em how to conduct boxing exhibitions at Turner hall, 14th avenue and Washington street in Gary last night. Although the crowd did not come up to expectations and Pete lost some money, every fighter advertised on the card made his appearance on the evening program. There was not a fan who left the hall that did not go home satisfied and promised himself a ringside ticket the next time Pete gives a show. The bouts were conducted just as they should be. Although they were a little slow In getting started there was no waiting between bputs. As soon as one bout was over there were two more gloved men watting at the ringside to take their places. There was also no stalling on the part of the glove artists for they were warned "No fight, no money," and would not get another chance to appear in Pete's arena again. Scrap Iron Unger of the Pullman A. C. and Jimmy McKeg of the Perry A. C, both South Chicago 118 pounders, furnished the curtain raiser. It was fast and furious for the scheduled six rounds and neither seemed to have a shade over the other. It was a good draw. Years ago the writer first saw a young fighter named Shuffle Callahan in a Gary bout. He was a puny, sickly looking young fellow and although a tough and willing boxer, what he didn't know about the game was a lot. A physician had advised him to take up physical culture and boxing to make a new man out of him. Shuffle did and worked hard. Last night showed the result of his training. The writer , and many others did not know him and could hardly believe him to be the same "Shuffle." He had filled out from toe to the top of his head and had every appearance of a fighter. A fighter he proved, and he carried a punch with it His opponent was one Jimmy Deana, a though boy from . South Chicago. The gong had hardly tapped until Shuffle was in the middle of the ring and at Deana like a lion at bay. Deana saw so many gloves he hardly knew what happened. Shuffle carried the first round by a big margain. The second round was the same only it did not last as long. After a minute of fast fighting Shuffle

It was an awful wallop-and Deana fell flat on his face completely out. The third fight between Ollie O'Neill and Harry Leonard, both of South Chicago, was as good an exhibition as can be hoped for. The little fellows were fast and clever, both carrying), a stinging wallop that many times resounded across the ring. By his aggressiveness and cleverness in sending clean wallops, Leonard earned a shade. The fourth bout saw Young Habish of Pittsburgh and Billy Henry of South Chicago, fight ten fast rounds to a draw. It was a fight from start to finish, neither having a thing on the other in any department of the game.
