It was a snappy, lazy day in fune. The streets of the little Alabama town were nearly deserted, Along the sidewalk there strolled a

Courtly gentleman in the frock

coat and wide-brimmed hat of the southern colonel. A shifty-eyed; darky, much the worse for boot-

legger stuff, shambled along in the opposite direction. As the two passed the darky spoke angrily and drunkenly to the colonel, "Git outa ma way, yo' pore white trash, I'se a mean nigger." They buried the darky the next day, down in the little cemetery by the river. At the trial of the colonel the jury deliberated for two entire minutes. Then they filed in and an. [INTER NATIONAL NEWS SERVICE] EVANSVILLE Sept. 23. Vanderburgh county bootleggers and white mule manufacturers are In a Jubllant mood today. During the past sixteen months Sheriff Males and his three county patrolmen have arrested on an average each week, two bootleggers and have discovered three stills. Auditor Copeland cut off the pay of the three sleuths recently, declaring a decision given him by the state board of accounts shows he has no right to take the money out of the g-eneral fund to pay expenses and salaries of the officers. The county council two weeks ago appropriated $6,000 for expenses of the county booze squad for 1923. This money will not be available, however, until January 1. So far the money has been taken out of the general fund under an emergency clause. According to officials of the state board of accounts, the emergency clause does not cover the moonshine business. The three men on the booze squad, George Gillis, Otto Klein and George Hewig, did not make their beats Monday. Four attorneys have been named as an investigating committee to look up the legal Question involved .in the refusal of Auditor Copeland to further honor orders for salaries by three county judges. And the bootleggers and still operators are endeavoring to make booze while the moon shines. BURKET, Sept. 22. -- For. a period of 18 years. Alpheus Matthews, employe of the New York.
