Th rllffifyus education program which lias ben conducting week day classs for two years and which last year taugrht 3.700 boys and girls in Hammond, Whttingr. East Chicago And Indiana Harior has been making an lmrortant contribution to lh ceJtgrtoua and social ife of the.e comteuinities. All children whose parent requested it in writing have been a4M to attend without cost. They have (been taught the fundamental truth of the Bflri and the treat hymns .which the race has produced. The religious heroes who liave dared to do right even when they were tempted to do wrong for personal grain, have been made to live in the, lives of these boys and Kirls. The aim has been to develop ideals which would immediately .modify 'behavior. There are everal conclusions becoming Increasingly evident. 1. The program is significant 'because it teaches children religion wiio otherwise would receive no forraai religious instruction. In Hammond 40 per cent of the public school children attend week day religious elasses. Only half of those attend any church school. 2. It implements the work of the chfurch, school. Teachers in the church school report that they can tell which children take week 3ay instruction (because of their greater intelligence on religious matters. 3. The children enjoy the work. One ten year old boy said the other day that he used to like geography best but that now he liked religion best. One canot visit the classes without 'being convinced that the boys and girls like iu 4. The teachers enjoy thler work. The program is very fortunate in having" secured such an efficient group of well trained teachers, who

in their living practice what they J

preach. They are working conscin-' t lousy and enthusiastically to teach religion eo that shall .become a part of the lives of these 2,400 chi'iren. The teachers enjoy the work for they see it gives point to all the rest of the education of the child. 6. The instruction 13 already tearing fruit. Children who are tak. Ing the work ,ro getting a grasp on the greatest Book in the world. In addition to learning Bible- stories, and lessons which deal with religious heroes, more than half the pupils in many of the classes have on their own iniative ought Bibles and are learning how to use them. Part ofl the class period is used in worship. The children are given a background which will make them at home In chiurch&s. Singing and prayer Oiave their rightful place in the worship. The smaller children pray without self consciousness and without prompting. Every day is a new day with new blessings; and there are the fclessings of the preceding night, rest, and God's carethen God has griven oh, eo many things. Why ehouldn't prayer be natural! "VThy not talk with one's Heavenly Paher! In a class of second grade children Tommy was sick. On little girl said: "Teacher, why not ask God to help Tommy r When the prayer period came, mingled vxith. the other prayers was this one. "Dear Go I. please make Tommy -"well?". Th next day Tommy waa (better aad the litt.'e girl said

to her teacher. "There, Uod aid hear me, didn't Ho?' A group1 of ten year pup;1 had as their lesson the story of Dorcas. That noon it was oold and one little girl aw a small boy whose coat wa$ 'Unbuttoned. Xiater she told her teacher: "l saw a boy who was cold, and his coat wasn't 'buttoned to I said to myself Dorcas would button his coat so I went over and buttoned it for ihim." one -boy was accustomed to swearing. Before Thanksgiving the lessons centered around the theme of the many things which God has blessed us, and for which we should ibe thankf ul. One day the boy who swore regularly was with another boy who happened to swear. Turning on iiim the former said "God lias given ua everything we have

and He wouldn't like to have you say that." Such Incidents as these culled from may indicate that' already the program is beginning to bear fruit. One's imagination Is gripped with the possibilities of such a program. A generaton of people whose conduct is determined by ideals of clean living -and fair play, backed up toy other religious ideals is not - an idle dream. If it is true that "what is needed in the life of the nation and the church must first be put into its schools;" then den-eloping such ibackgrounds of ideals in a considerable percentage of the whole group of children in the community has real significance.
