MENTS MUSI BE BUILT TO

PAVE

"BEND" WITHOUT "BREAKING"!

(BY A- IA.YiM-0 . ) I stood by the side of the road and watched some sweating worAmen pour a liot sticky substance in the cracks between the newlylaid brick in tha pavement. I wondered wihat it was and why it was used. This gave me an excuse lor opening conversation wiUi the engineer of the Jofb. "Pavements must bo built to bend without breaking:," was his terse reply. "I looked at him like a fool. Who over heard of pavements bendlnsr? I suspected that, seeing- I was a layman, he was trying- to ppoof me. Well, he couldn't food me. "Bend?' 'Ha ha," I laughed"Thafs a good one." He looked down at me pityingly, etaxted to turn away as if in disgust and then, evidently thinking there still was hope ol saving me from total ignorance, tried again. He was a busy man and said a lot in a few words. "A pavement must have Ave characteristics, and if any cne is absent, the pavement has lost Just that much of its value. It must be hard, 'but not .brittle; smooth, but not 'slick;' tough, but not rough; flexible, not rigid; waterproof, not porous." He picked up a paving brick and, shoving it under my nose in a manner that made me step back, he continued: "See this brick? It is hard, smooth, tough, and won't absorfo water. That stuff they're pouring In the carcks is asphalt filer. When you're all done, your pavement is hard, smooth, tough, waterproof and flexible. It will ibend when it has to." Ouch! There was that "bend" again. Was he kidding me? Re-anemberinR-my father's- advice in early life to always "ask questions," I fired awiy: "I don't quite understand that 'bending' business," I said. "I never saw a pavement bend."

"You've seen pavements cracked, haven't you?" he asked. I said that I had, and he informed me that the cracking often was due to the pavement's rigidity and refusal to bend. "Old mother earth'a surface isn't still for a woment, and I'm not

referring to its turning on its axis or moving around the sun, either. ' The ground right under your f eet j Is moving this very second, expand- j lng with moisture or contracting as It dries out. You've seen a j sponge swell up. Also, you've seen cracks in the clay soil when it has dried out after a rain. More than j

that, you ehould know that in winter the freezing and thawing means expansion and contraction. "No power In the world that man knows about as yet, can entirely stop these movements. We can only minimize them. When you put a stiff, rigid pavement on the ground, the earth moves under it. Sometimes the pavement is supported and sometimes it isn't. Along comes heavy traffic and cracks it. Disintegration follows." He didn't notice my open mouth, and kept right on. "Old Sol gets In his licks, too. His heat expands pavements, and cold contracts therm. If there is no 'give' and 'take,' they simply must crack and crumble away. So, what you need is a pavement that will cling to mother earth like a wet blanket, only it musrt be hard, smooth, tough and waterproof. That filler makes the pavement waterproof and flexible. If tht base happens to be of the rigid kind, it may crack, but the aurface won't. Your brick are hard, tough and smooth, and your filler waterproof and flexible. There you have all five characteristics. Do you see " I smiled weakly, and thanked him.

Gold was discovered in California only eight miles from the present Lincoln highway, at Placervllle, in 184S.

EARTHOMEpROBLEM5

' Dear Mrs. Thompson: I urn a J-oung woman seventeen years old and have just started to work. I have been going with a young man the same age whom I love dearly. My parents think a great deal of him. He has not said anything about marriage yet, but some friends told me he was engaged to a girl out of town. When I told him about it he owned up and said he was going to break the engagement as he did not love her any longer. Should I continue to go vrith him? Do you think he loves pie? Is there anything that will remove moles from the face without having them taken out? THANK YOU. It is very silly for a seventeen year old boy to be engaged or to think of marriage. Since he is treating his financee so shamefully, he will probably do the same to you when he loses interest in you and likes some other girL After he breaks his engagement go with him if ou want to, but do i.ot go with him while he i3 engaged to another girl. The only safe way to get rid of jnoles is o have them removed by means of the electric needle. Dear Mrs. Thompson: Is it a wife's place to go to her husband and greet him with a kiss when he comes home from work, or is it fcis place to greet her first? B. S. ' If you stop to consider whose Jjlace it is to do such things, you will not find much happiness in your married life. Run to the front door when you hear your hvsba and kiss him. I presume at times Vou will feel vour husband .'s very indifferent, lie will enjoy his evening paper and will not care if you are tired and in a mood to be loved. If you are a wise little wife you will respect his moods and will not ehow your disappointment . when

he is indifferent; instead you will appreciate the times when he is thoughtful and affectionate. Dear Mrs. Thompson: My girl friend is kind hearted and lovable.

but she is very rough. She laughs ; 1 II.. I i 1- J

iouuiy ana tarns in a ioua voice. 1 Lately boys have been taking in interest in me and when one of them would ask to come over I have told him to bring some one else and I would have my girl friend. I did not re&lize until lately that she was so rough. When I serve cocoa and cookies she throws cook- : ies s'; the boys and does thines like I

that. The boys don't seem to care, but it gets on my nerves. Do you think I should tell her I think she is rough, or should I stop inviting her? QUESTIONING. All of ns have so many faults that it is a question whether one of us should try to correc. the faults in another. If we are broad minded, however, we are grateful when some one tells us of a failing so that we can correct it. If you are very tactful I Lelieve you can do your girl friend a great deal of good by telling her that her excitement makes her talk and laugh more loudly than she realizes. Also you might tell her that you don't think she should threw your cookies around. It will be wiser, however, not to say too much or she will be deeply hurt and offended. You might suggest . j her that she tell you your biggest faults and in exchange you will tell her what you consider her biggest faults. BLUE-EYED BOBBY: I admire you for your stand for right, but I am afraid living up to your ideal shut3 out your human understanding. Say that you forgive atd still love. Do not lower your own standards in the future, however.
