The United States railroad labor -board Is prepared to Stack up In every possible way Its recent wage reduction orders and to use erery power at Its command to aivert a nation-wide railroad strike, it was indicated, following the reply of Ben W. Hoarer chairman of the board, to the "ultimatum" Issued Sunday by rail union leaders at Cincinnati. The "ultimatum'' declared that If the membership of the unions voted to strike the leaders -would not oppose tt. Hooper's reply was sent to Bert M. Jewell, president of the railway employee department of the American Federation of I.abor. it declared that a strike would entail "disaster for the unions and unfortunate results for the members." Statements made by the union chiefs in their "ultimatum" were characterized i7 Hooper as "misleading" and as an "Inexcusable perversion of both the language and meaning of the board's wage cut decisions. Particular in sue is taken by Hooper with the convention of the union chiefs that the wages for section men hare been fixed by the board at 25 cents an hour. Hooper contends tfcat while the minimum wage Is 23 cents an hour, this applies to only a few employes and that the srroraga Is S2.7 cents, an Increase of 69 4 per cent over the average of 1317.
