IRISH FREE STATE HAS
LECTION
By DANIEL O'CONNELL STAFF CORRESPONDENT 1. N. SERVICE DUBLIN, June 16. The Irish nee State is engaged today In the double task of conducting its first free election and scrutinizing: the new Irish constitution printing Ireland more political liberty than any other British dominion. Early polling was light and no serious disorders bad been reported up to noon. Eamonn da Valera was absent from home, but members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood announced that they were planning; a fight against Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith, indicating that the follow, ers of De Valera will make a fight against the amended constitution. On the whole, however, the public seems entirely satisfied. If the moderates are given control of the Free State parliament It will be a victory for the treaty and constitution; if the Republicans are given control it will be a defeat of the treaty and constitution. The Republicans frankly announce that they will attempt to abolish the oath of allegiance to the Britlsn empire if they get a working membership in the Dail Eireann. If De Valera Is defeated he may again resort to militant method. There is much speculation as to whether De Valera will likely secure one of the non-parliamentary memberships in the cabinet. Under the constitution this would limit his power.
The apathy of the people was difficult to understand in view of the political agitations that have disturbed the country for years. Some political leaders estimated that not more than 59 per cent of the electorate would vote. The Independents hoped to take twelve seats away from the De Valera adherents in the Dail. but the situatien was complicated and much depended-upon the amount of military pressure exerted In the Tipperary and Mayo districts.
The Freeman's Journal and the !
Irish Independent today welcomed the constitution and urged the election of men who support it.

t INTER NATIONAL NEWS SERVICE ST. LOUIS, Mo., June 16. Adolphus Busch sat in his office in the famous old Anheuser-Busch brewery and coagitated on the probable effect of his letter to Chairman Albert Latker of the shipping board, in reply to Lasker's defense of the legality of the sale of intoxicants on shipping board vessels and attacking Busch's motives In calling attention to conditions. Busch cheerfully admitted Lasker's charge of selfish motives in seeking to regain the lawful right to make beer. "We. in that respect at least, have the shipping board as an example," he wrote, "the shipping board desires to maintain the value of the government's Investment of many
minions mayoe savea through a
restoration of the lawful right to make wholesome teer." The young beverage manufacturer, disclaiming any desire to argue
with the shipping tioard. reiterated his charges that the board "without taking the trouble to get the law
amended," violates prohibition law.
