that all serious diffloujties are now past and that by means of mutual co-operation between capital and laJbor a future free from labor troubles may be looked forward to by the sugar plantations of Hawaii. Because f Ms recent sojourn at Shanghai, where he was consular representative for the Japanese government, Yamasaki was questioned as to the probable developments In China. These, he said, are. In his opinion, likely to be most unsatlsfacory for the next few years. The Sun Tat Sen government with headquarters at Canton, has small hopes of success In Its attempt to unite China under one government, and it will in all probability be many years Ibefore China, recognizes her own weaknesses sufficiently to take effective steps to remedy them, Yamasaki believes. In connection with his discussion of China, the Japanese consul general took occasion to state that Japan will never consider intervening In China to restore order or to attempt to set up a stable form

of government. The only possibility of Japanese Intervention In China, Yamasaki states, wou4d be for protection of Japanese lives or property In the event of an outbreak similar to the Boxer uprising. Statements reported to have been made by Koreans' and Korean sympathizers accusing the Japanese government of practicing atrocities In Korea were refuted in toto by Yamasaki, who stated that the Koreans had been and" were toeing given every " opportunity to have a voice in governing their country. Hard feeling between the two nations has been fostered by ill-advised Korean J -the ads. Yamasaki believes, and the assassination, of several Japanese officials In Korea as a means of securing revenge for fancied wrongs has kept hatred aflame between the two peoples and prevented the establishment of a satisfactory Korean government administration by Koreans. Evacuation of Korea by Japan is not looked for 'by Yamasaki.
