East Chicago Chamber of Commerce Listens to a Lecture on the Famed Jordan Spreader.
Members of tho East Chicago Chamber of Commerce last night at a dinner at the First Congregational church listened to a lecture, illustrated vtlth motion pictures, which told the story of the wide uses in far fiung localities of the Jordan spreader, a machine manufactured at heme. The East Chicagoans learned that the Jordan spreader, which Is also a snow plow and ditch builder, was used by Goethais in digging the Panama canal, by Gltason in building the great Gary steel plant, and is employed at present by a Canadian railroad to help extend its rails into the silent northern woods of the Hudson Bay Company's domain. They also saw movies of the Jordan at work last winter opening up the ice-locked railways of Northern Michigan. COL. RILEY CALLED AWAY , A, L. Greenabaum, general manager of the O. F. Jordan company, was the speaker. Thi motion pictures were i;. charge of A. E. Gundelach of the Atla's KducationaV Film Company, Chicago. Col. Walter J. Riley, president of the O. F. Jordan Company, was to have been the speaker, but he had to go to New York yesterday noon to attend the meeting of the board of directors of the Monon railway. Mr. Greenabaum substituted for him. STOHV OF THE JORDAN' General Manager Greenabaum spoke in part as follows: 'The size of the many diversified industries -of the city of East Chicago is not an index to their relative importance. "Not the largest and not -the smallest of the industrial concerns here Is the O. F. Jordan Company. "Yet the part that the machines manufactured by this company plays in the transportation, construction and mining enterprises of the North American continent is probably far greater than most of you realize.

the romance of a machine, yet -tnere are many stories in connection with the Jordan spreader, which is also a ditcher and snow plow, that would grip the imagination were there time to tell of them to you. HELPED BUILD PANAMA CASAL "We as Americans are proud of the Panama canal, a monument to President Roosevelt.' It was a boldachievement, and as we grow older we become more proud of this ocean linking waterway. It will- mean more even to our children. "The Jordan spreader was used by Goethais to help build the Panama canaL DEVELOPED CANADA'S RAILWAYS "And it figured in the development of the great Canadian Northwest. The Canadian-Pacific System,
the only railroad that crosses the American continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific, employed Jordan spreaders to help extend its lines, "Perhaps torn of you read the recent articles in the. Saturday Evening Post entitled 'At the End of Steel." They told of the building of a new Canadian railway that pierces the silent northern wilderness, the fastness of the historic Hudson Bay Company. It is the Jordan that is being used to help contruct that distant railway. AT GARY STEEL PLANT "We also have something nearer at hand. Another move to obtain clemency for Clem Farwlck, convicted Hamilton county well poisoner, will be made at the next session of the state board of parons, June 12 to 16. Farwlck, sentenced to prison at Noblesvillc in December, 1919, Is among five whose cases are to be reopened. A list of 69 new appeals for clemency to come before the board at the next session was made public today. It includes: Frank Bass, Delaware county, fined $1,000. (Remission asked). Robert Calloway, Elkhart county state farm and fine. Liquor case. Lawrence Mallahan, Wabash county, robbery, reformatory. Charles Lee, Dealaware county, farm and fine, liquor case. ARRESTED ON SERIOUS CHARGE On a warrant issued by County Clerk Herbert Wheaton yesterday John Medvik of Gary was arrested by the Gary police authorities. Medvik was arrested on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and his cose will be heard before Judge Martin Smit'h in the Lake Criminal court at Crown Point.

IND., June 8 The following violations were, arraigned in ihe city police courts this week: John Lambarso was arrested by Officer Saltsman for passing a stand .ng street car, wasfou nd guilty and lined 111. Bart L. Grary, arrested jn the tame charge, by Officer As--ienhlemer also paid a fine of $11. Joseph A. King, arrested by Officer Urowii for operating an automobile without a license paid a fine of $11, and Marry Macy arrested on two charges of driving a car without a
license and without lights was found guilty and paid a fine of $10 for first and $20 for the other. Peter Stanske paid $11 for operating a car without a license, and Jake Lazor, arrested by Officer Wagner for speeding at 34 miles an hour paid a fine of $11. Louis Baumwohl arrested by Officer Kilculleiv at 512 John St., for assault and battery and disorderly conduct, was found guilty and fined $20 on the first, and $15 on the second charge. 1'ete Jancich was arrested by Officers Kilcullen, Brown, Hall and Surdukowski at 511. 121st st. They found one glass grallon jug one-half full of moonshine whiskey and onefourth pint bottle of same. A $1,000 bond was becured by-Mike Ivachic for his appearance today. Andie Kospyo was arrested by Officers Saltsman and Wagner at 515 John street, after Saltsman had sworn out a warrant charging Kospyo with assault and battery and resisting an officer. He was released after a $200 bail had been secured from George Kundrat and will appear today for trial.

Baughman went to Bloomlngton, Ind., yesterday morning to attend the commencement exercises of the Indiana University. Her daughter Henrietta, is a member of the graduating class. . Word was received here yesterday of tho marriage at Richmond. Calif., of McKinley Deathe to Miss Lucille Harding. The groom Is the som of Mrs. G. M. Deathe of Lowell and the bride Is a former teacher in our public schools. Both the bride and the groom have a large circle of friends here who extend congratulations to them.
