SPOXGE SQVAD ACTIVE The Sponge Squad yesterday under orders of Captain Tim O'Xeil of the East Chicago police station mobilised their forces on a drive against the Calumet section of the city. In the favored section of Alexander avenue ftt 5014 the prohibition ofcera found Steve Popp. In the fcasement of his police, police officers TrtanJ and Parenlcka also located a small stock of unmatured "moonshine." Simultaneous with this raid, officer Kerr, single-handed, entered Steve Kukla's place at 4735 Alexander avenue and backing the patrol to the basement window carted away one large still, ten gallons of mash and one gallon of liquor. Both Popp and Kukla who were ar rested on charges of violating the state liquor law, were released on 1,00 bonds. SENT TO PRISON Annie Steine of 3683 Block avenue was convicted of prostitution yesterday In the East Chicago court by Special Judge Hyroan M. Cohen and sentenced to serve thirty-flve days at the Women's State prison at Indianapolis. v T, J. BENNETT MISSING Thomas J. Bennett, a foreman at the Fruit Grower's Association. Indiana Harbor, is reported by officials of the concern to (have been missing from the Harbor plant since May 27, a week ago. No trace of the missing man can be learned after he left the plant last Saturday night. Whether he has been a victim of foul play or is visiting friends without hia relatives knowledge Is unassurred. When last seen he wor a dark coat and cap. Mr. Bennett Is 23 years old, 5 feet, 11 Inches tall and weighs 170 pounds, has iuburn colored hair. AWAIT WOMAN'S ARREST The case of Mike Nistor, operator of a saloon at 4802 Todd are., who is charged with manslaughter when selling "moonshine" to Charles Keegan that Is alleged to have caused his death, was continued runtil the arrest of Mrs. Nistor. could he effected. From the testimony of Mike Nistor, the counsel for the defendant, convinced the court that Mrs. Nistor was the only person in charge of the place at the time of Keegan's death and should be taken into custody. Technical points as to the legality of the affidavit were' advanced by Attorney Royce, who Is representing the defendant, which were accepted by Special Judge Cohen, for continuing the case. Twin City News Notes Last evening East Chicago Eastern Star held thelr'regular meeting and initiated four candidates. In connection with this, a reception was given in honor of Mrs. Nannie Canine, Grand Ruth. A short musi cal program was given by Mrs. Joseph Fisher and Mrs. D. C. Reid. All chapters from Lake county and some from Porter county were invited and most of these were well represented, as were a number of other chapters. The spacious hall had been beautifully decorated. The color scheme of yellow and white was carried out In the decorations and also in the dainty lunch served inthe reception room at the close of chapter. Mrs. Canine was presented with a bouquet of Miss Ophelia roses 'and plumosa ferns, a gift from her own chapter, and with hand painted plates, a gift from Olive chapter of Gary. These were graciously received and Mrs. Canine's remarks of gratitude and appreciation were enjoyed by all. East Chicago chapter feels proud of the honor bestowed upon them In the appointment of Mrs. Canine as Grand Ruth. East Chicago Pythian Sisters will hold a bake eale Saturday afternoon at Rottenberg's grocery. Mrs. William Krueger of Porter, Ind., was a guest yesterday at the homes of her sister Mrs. Frank Nicklea, on 148th street, and her brother R. E. Eshenbach on Chicago avenue. Jack and George Newell, small sons of, Mr. and Mrs. Burt Newell, are reported as on the sick list this week. The funeral of the late George H.
