"Morrle" Cole wasted his skill against the Gary A. C. Sunday because of the miserable fielding of his teammates. Six glaring blunders behind him practically handed over the victory 5 to 1. Three of the errors were made in the first inning and with the aid of two hits, four runs were produced. Both Knight and Cole pitched splendid ball each allowing only flv hits. Knight had a slight shade over Cole in that he did not issue a base on balls, while Cole walked four men. . The North Slders scored their lonely tally In the third. O'Reel first up hit a two (base clout to right field. Clark the next batter laid down a neat bunt along the first tase line, which advanced O'Reel to third. The Cole struck BY DAVIS J. Two of our heremetlcally sealed champions are to emerge from the cocoon In a very short time, one to defend his title against a good second rater, the other to engage in a no-decision bout with the only man who figures to give him a real battle. The Benny Leonard-Lew Tendler lightweight extravaganza is on for July 20 at Jersey City, according to semi-official advices. They have not signed for the bout yet but they have agreed to terms laid down by eminent Mr. Rickard and the signing of articles is only a formality. Next we 'have Johnny KiVbane agreeing to defend his featherweight title against Charlie Beecher some time, some place. Details of the bout are- somewhat vague, but on the assurance of Phil Bernstein, 1 manager of Beecher, the champion has definitely accepted the match. In the 'first place, Bernstein says hla offer to Kllbane was $50,0000 to be advanced toy Berstein'a accommodating friends upon demand. That will make a tolerable lot of pennies for Johnny's vest pocket. In the second place, Beecher is not the moot dangerous contender for the featherweight title. Not "by the height of your alabaster brow. A bout with Johnny Dundee, for example, would be another proposition. However, it is pleasing to note that Kilbane is disposed to come up out of the camphor at all. The Leonard-Tendler match is contingent upon the serenity of Intervening events. DEFEATED BLUE ISLAND WHITING, IND. June 1 Playing a snappy brand of ball all afternoon the fast Whiting high school nine annexed their fourth victory of the season by trouncing Blue Island, 7 to 0. Only once did the Islanders have a chance. They collected two of their three hits in the fourth round, but Al Koch, the Whiting slab ace was equal to the occasion and turned them back with out a marker. The Green and White contingent started the assault in the second inning by1. counting three times, enough to win the game. They sewed the game up in the fourth by making two run and added two more in the seventh for good measure. Al Koch twirled a wonderful game for the Oil City bunch, allowing but three hits, fanning seven and issuing only one free ticket. Ernie Walsko carried off the batting honos for the day by unbelting a homer, double and single. Ernie's circuit swat was a screeching liner to left and came with one man on base. Tommy Dwan gave a nice exhibition of fielding, pulling down some -liners which looked like sure hits. Ws Sowers had a big day on the hot corner and his double In the second started the scoring for Whiting. Erickaon and Bolman, the Island batter-, performed in a most efficient' manner. PAnflrj new mu WW 5PEE0 RECORD

The Paige 6-66 Daytona Model established a new world's stock chassis record for 25 miles on the Cotatl, Calif., track Sunday, May T. when it covered the distance in 15 minutes and 27 9E-100 seconds, traveling at the terrific speed of 96.98 miles an hour plus. The most Interesting and significant feature of this remarkable performance is the fact that in order to establish a new world's mark for 25' miles the Paige had to shatter records made by Itself about one year ago on the TJniontown, Pa., track." At that time it broke all world's stck chassis speedway records from 5 to 100 miles. These records remained untouched and even challenged until the Paige tackled theut on tne California track. The previous, world's record for 25 miles, set by the Paige Itself, was 16:37.94 or 90.1 miles an hour, so that the performance in California shows a marked improvement over a figure that no other car was able to lower or even equal in a year's time. Piloted by Earl Cooper and clocked by Fred Wagner, official timer for the A. A. A., the record breuKing performance of the Paige at Cotatl was an exhibition dash against time, staged as a preliminary to a regular racing program. All regulations for such speed trials having been duly complied with, the A. A. A. has authenticated the California performance and the new Paige time for 25 miles is consequently proclaimed the official record for stock chassis. ROCCO MATCHED FOR A FIGHT Comes forth the. announcement that Pattsy Rocco, Tim O'Neil's fancy 142 pounder, is booked up for two tough fi&'hts in local parts.' One, of which the full details have been arranged, looks like a corker on the face of it. It brings together two boys of two different Lake county cities, and each with a large and rabid following. Frank Hiplock. dandy middleweight pug of Hammond, Is the scrapper Tim has matched against his prise. Hiplock has been an in-and-outer of the game for a good number of years. And during that time he has amassed quite a warehouse of fighting knowledge. At any rate, he Is slated to give the black haired wop from the Twin City region quite a chase for sis bacon. Frank's chief ware In stock is a wicked right hook to the heart. His followers claim It makes the cuckoos sing when it sinks. However, far be It from the handlers who pull Pattsy's strings to let Frank sink his cuckoo trainer. Tim is sending the wop through a hard training gaff in preparation for the affair. And every one knows that when Pattsy Is primed on all six he is one of the niftiest workers a third rater could face. The argument is ticketed to go eight rounds, June 15, 1922, at the Summer Gardens of West Hammond.
