-KV YOKK. May 25. Ju mere are any lingering1 doubts In the mind of this generation as to the wide scope of women. 's activities. Just let him for we'll aume it would be a "him" come to the exhibition to be held here in the near future of tho New York League of Business and Professional "Women. It la for the purpose of showing that women have done and are doing these past few years in the way of commerce, profession, and industry, and its revelat'ons will be pretty nearly amazing to some of the conservative lookers on at woman's' world. Mining, engineering, road 'building, plumbing, banking rwell, practically every ocoupation will be represented there. It will be the first exhibition of the kind to have been held in any country.

The time is passed when we can speak of the bobbed hair "fad." It's like the sport suit "fad'' or the "fad" for Jade ornaments. That is, it is a matter of several years, maybe a generation, and now, at the time, when the sceptics expected it to be well on the wane, it is more popular than at any time in the past. is'o longer is It confined to motion picture actresses and young school girls. More than half the girls and women I know under the age of forty seem to have had their hair cut and waved and several years taken off their ages in consequence. Of course straight 'bobbed hair is prety bad; but who wears it straight? Just as short skirts made atractive hosiery essential, so has the bob converted everyone to the permanent wave. Mr. Nest)e. of 12 East 49th street, the permanent wave authority of the country, told me the other day that aside of the thousands wh have the wave put in by experts, it 'has become a regular home industry. The permanent wave outfit is parked in the bathrom along with the electric

bathroom along wit hthe electric

sold over 10,000 outfits for home use In the past year," he said, "and the number is growing every day. Noti- that the wave can be put in without any danger of injury to the hair it is becoming an accepted necessity of life."

given to cleanliness than to the artificial aids to beauty, too. For against that seventy-five cents, each one spends a dollar a year for soap!

A centennial oak from Grant's farm near St. Louis has -been planted near Grant's tomb on Riverside drive, by the American Forestry Association of Washington, to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Dr. Samuel Reinhardt. of 230 Keap street, Brooklyn, has offered his stolen Ford sedan as a reward to the person who stole it if he will

return the 'bag of surgical instruments and an account book left in the car. He ought to- have a good chance of getting back his prize possessions under that condition, unless perchance it was a patient whose name is down in the account book who did the stealing. LUCY JEANNE PRICE.

Ohio river steamer Island Queen, whose forward decks collapsed. Inserts, left. Senator Atle Pomerene; right, Carmi Thompson, Ohio gubernatorial candidate, were passengers on boat. j

A score of men prominent in the public life of Ohio escaped serious injury when the decks of the steamer Island Queen collapsed while the boat was carrying a crowd of celebrators to the

Grant centennial at Point Pleasant, Ohio. They were on the forward deck when it collapsed, injuring twenty-eight persons. Amonjc those who escaped injury were U. S. Sen. Atlee Pomerene

and Carmi Thompson, candidate ' for governor on the Republican ticket. President Harding and his party originally were slntcd to make the trip from Cincinnati on the boat, but at the last moment took another steamer.

Sheriff Wagner, down on Long

Island, is a patient and long-suffer-!ns man, hut it seems as though

fate and his Job had been unusually

unkind to him these last few days.

They have forced him to locking

up in his Jail 900 innocent little chickens, REAL chickens. Judg'e Humphrey issued an order ousting Mrs. Bridget Cone, alleged to be a squatter, from property at Richmond Hill, Long Island, the other day.

Now Mrs. Cone has a flock of chick- ',

ens, 900 strong, which the Judge ordered Sheriff Wagner to take charge of. The Sheriff hasn't any place of his own where he can keep them. He musn't sell them. He musn't kill them. There was nothing for him to do but put them in

jail, so he did It.

The "Bronx Express," the new play produced by Mr. and Mrs. Coburn, at the Astor Theatre, Is the story of a dream the dream of a man who wanted to work for beauty rather than for money. It has one remarkably vivid and arresting scene In the Bronx express subway train, and there are Interesting episodes and reactions throughout. The Coburns are both in the cast.

After all the terrible Indictments against us as a sex and as a nation for overwhelming amounts of money spent on cosmetlea and the Jike, I feel quite relieved to read the statement made by the Manufacturing Perfumer's Association, in convention here. Hadn't you got an Idea that Just about half our sav

ings or what we ought to 'be sav

ing was being tossed over the counter for rouges and beauty lo

tions of vnrious kinds? Well, it isn't so. Just seventy-flv'ecents is sprnt by the average person in one whole year for toilet preparations, perfumeries, etc. I should say that is about as modest as could be expected of anybody. We're mire

When the school inspector walked in the class pulled itself together and determined not to make any mistakes this time.

All went well until the inspector picked on Jimmie. "Now, my lad," he said, "what's the plural of mouse T" "Mice," said Jimmie. "Right," said the inspector. "And row, what is the plural of baby?" "Twins!" said Jimmie and that did it.

An old Irishwoman in a certain village was trying to dispose of some new-born kittens. She offered them to the minister, saying that they were such nice Protestant kittens. In spite of that inducement he refused them, and had a good laugh with the priest over her Words. A few weeks later she offered the kittens to the priest, saying that they were such nice Catholic kittens. He reminded her that she had offered them to the minister as Protestant kittens, to whichti'.ie replied: "Sure, father, I know that tut they've had their eyes opened since then!" On the occasion of her hundredth birthday the village centenarian received a visit from the vicar. Being anxious to hear from her own lips what she considered had been the source of her strength end sustenance, he said: "My dear Mrs. Adams, pray tell me, in order that I may tell to others, what has bon the secret of your longevity?" The vicar waited with unusual eagerness for the old lady's reply, but be was hardly prepared for it wht-n it came "-Victuals!" she snawexsd.
