NEW WtK. Hay 19. Love pirates and the South Seas have had to Blv way to another favorite on th Jfewr Tork book counters. More in demand than anything els In tha world Just now, say the dealers, are books on "mario." The demand extends to svery class of the community. Ghosts. anels, demons, ad telepathic forces are being: Invoked alifee In mansion and tenement. Whole departments In the book hops fcjtve been cleared for treatises oa these things, with bis placards and arrows pointing- the way to them.

Plans tor the uveUlngT of busts f Washlns-ton, Mark Hopkins. EdSar Allen Foe. Marts Mitchell and Ollbert Charles Stuart In the Hall of Ffn. for Great Americans at New "Xork TJarverslty have been announced for lata thta month. Ed' ward hCarVhan wiii -unveil the bust of Poa.

Maybe It's true what we wrote the other day about the age of the flapper beg-lcnins; to dim. giving a chance to the older woman. Anyhow, 4rf?-o's one rather vivid demonstration of the fact. Mrs. Bay Burken. West 11th street. Is not only forty-five years old. but she is the mother of alg-ht children and the grandmother of one, and she has just been declared a love-thief in no less a place then the Courts of New Tork County. The sheriff's Jury grave a verdict of $100,000 to Mrs. Sally Goldberg, who at the more Capperlsh age of 27 years declares she was unable to hold her husband's Interest against the charms of the grandmother rival.

Mary Boland In "The Advertising of Kate," a delightful comedy by Annie Nathan Mayer, which Just opened at the Maxine Elliot Theatre, playa the role of the modern, efficient, charming young business woman, who see her chances In life disappearing because 5he Is too business-like chances For love and marriage, I mean. She decides to advertise herself as she does her clients' products, and turns Into a butterfly pro tern. It works. The play Is well written and well-acted.

There might be some towns where It would be difficult, but we find It easy here to hustle and yet let the grass grow under or feet. At one place, neas Broadway and Leonard

street, there Is & small drainage

grating set into the sidewalk. Dust and dirt have set In it almost to the level of the sidewalk, and in that little plot, less than two foot square, grass grows luxuriantly. But it isn't Topsy grass, in that it "just growed." A truck driver, working in the neighborhood, realizing that the soil under the grating would be so good went to the trouble of planting the seed, and is rewarded by seeing ne blades trying to sprout up over the grating, but kept down all the time by the countless hoofs and feet which trod over them each day.

Jury quarters provided for women by state of Oregon.

Tomen Jarors in Oregon have .keen provided with "all the comforts of home" bv tha state dur

ing the time they serve on the juries. Individual-beds sre provided, light, airy room, newspa-

pers and manrines and other conveniences are at hand. Oregon women are satisfied.

In spite of all we read of the terrible congestion In the cities of the Orient and part of London, the new census shows that" our own New York is the most aensely populated city In the world. One and one-half per cent of the cities area is now occupied by' 18 per cent of the population, fifty-eight districts holding more than 4 00 persons to the acre.

It cost Gottlieb Dall Just $25 the other day to call vne of our policeman a "big stiff." He was'arrested for speeding and charged as much for the unkind remark to the patrolman as for the violation of the law. No more dancing until the summer sun is rising! At least not here in Gotham. Police Instructions have cut off this last flair of morning gayety along the Great White Way. All cabaret and shuffling of feet must cease at two a. m., promptly hereafter, however beguiling the jazs may be. There has been a provision in th city ordinance to that effect for many months, but no one knows why it is suddenly enforced. LTTCT JEANNE PRICE.

IDEAS FOR SHOWERS FOR BRIDES A Bride's Tree A tall tree with a ladder which the bride must climb in order to secure her, giftsis,.of

course, most striking, but even a small shrub will serve. All kinds of gifts can be tied to the boughs, forming a miscellaneous shower. Use narrow ribbon in any colors for attaching them amid the green, and further trim the tree with tissue paper flowers, handfuls of shredded tissue paper in pale pink and blue with horseshoes and stars cut from cardboard and gilded or silvered. Colored candles may be added in the little scones which come for Xmas trees. Again, a tree all In snowy white is lovely and affords one excellent plan for disposing of a linen shower. The various small pieces are attached to the branches with white ribbon and do not require wrapping. Handkerchiefs, collarettes, sachets and similar thinsrs can all be used as trimmings. The larger gifts might be wrapped in white paper and banked around the base of the tree, an arrangement sometimes adopted for larger gifts. Tissue paper snow and tufts of raw cotton add to the dazzling effect, scattered on the branches ana massed around the wooden supports of the tree. , Linen Shower Idea A most amusing way of arranging a linen shower is as follows: Clothes lines are stretched from point to point around the room, and to this the pieces of linen are attached with clothes pins. The bride is given a clothes basket in which to collect her gifts. These are afterwards wrapped and tied into conventional bundles or boxes by the company. To add to the excitement have a bag of clothes pins which contains among the ordinary pins a gilt one, a silver one and one stained bUck. The bag is drawn up closely wih a drawing string, and each girl in turn inserts her hand through the aperture thus formed, drawing out a clothes pin. She who draws the gilt will be the first to marry, she to whom the silver one falls will marry last or late in life, and the unlucky black clothes pin foredooms jtf jrecipient to old maidenhood.

GALLERY FANS RUIN DRAMA, CRITIC SAYS

(INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICEJ CHICAGO, May The troubls with the modern theatre Is that the gallery has moved down to tha main floor, according to Louis K. Anspaeher. playwright and lecturer on dramatlo subjects. With the descent of the "gallery god" to the orchestra circle has come a consesfluent lowering of dramatic standards and a decline In the theatre s repute. "The great middle class which formerly occupied the main floor of the theatre either has to 6tay at home now or sit In the gallery," Anspacher said. "A great many people who never had money before and who formerly sat In the gallery now have the means to sit on the main floor at the high prices which are charged to cover the enormous overhead of present-day production, and consequently the dramatic productions of the day are baaed on the likes of the former gallery fans. "Naturally, then, we have shows which are based on the box-ofTIce demands Instead of the true principles of dramatlo art. And box-office standards today are not very high." A subsidized theatre where worth while productions could be given a thorough trial and time to develop

an audience was suggested by Ans

pacher as the cure for the situation
