The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ward of Fishrupp avenue, is ill with pneumonia. The Whiting Eastern Stars attended the meeting in. Gary last evening and Mrs. Amelia Burton of this city and a past grand matron of the order presided. Born, to Dr. and Mrs. K. B. Keeler a little daughter in the St. Luke's hospital on Thursday. The Woman's Foreign Missionary will hold its anual thank-offering meeting in the M. E. church tomorrow morning. The many friends of Mrs. Frank Shoemaker, nee Josephine Jewett. formerly of this city will be grieved to learn of the sudden death of her husband, in South Carolina. The body was taken to Philadelphia to Mr. Shoemaker's former home for burial and Mr. and Mrs. Jewett, parents of Mrs. Shoemaker left for that place yesterday to attend funeral.. Mrs. Emery Black returned yesterday from Indianapolis where she attended the Rebecca conventlton. The people of Whiting are urged to secure garbage cans as many have been arrested for failing to provide same and littering their premises with refuse.

The Freshman and Sophomores gave a reception in honor of the Seniors at the home of Miss Agnes Hoffman on' Thursday evening. The evening was spent In playing games. A delightful time was had by all. The Lady Foresters were entertained at the home of Mrs. Alma Gettler on Thursday evening. Bunco was played. Prizes were awarded as follows: 1st prize, Mrs. Peter Hoffman; Booby prize to Miss Eva Ambre. Following this a nice lunchon was served.

S. are planning to attend a special meeting of the Gary chapter this evening. About 2:30 Wednesday nrght, tont chicken thieves entered the hen house of Mr. John E. Peterson who resides on the Ream farm. But they were frightened away by Mr. Peterson who heard them and went out to meet them with a shot gun. The two thieves escaped in an automobile which they had parked near the place.

The foremen of the Standard Oil Co., numbering one hundred and fifty enjoyed a chicken banquet at the Hammond Beach Inn on Wednesday evening. The after dinner speeches and musical numbers were very much appreciated by the gentlemen present. The Hammond Beach Inn is expected to be one of our most popular summer resorts this shimmer. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jewett of Indianapolis Blvd., received the sad news of the death of Frank Shumaker, their son-in-law, of Baden North Carolina on Thursday. The families left today for Pittsburgh, Pa., the home of Mr. Shumaker. where in terment will take place. Mrs. Shumaker was formerly Mis3 Josephine Jewett. ' Miss Violet Breckman of Atchison avenue spendt Thursday evening at the McClure home in East Chicago. Mrs. H. Harms returned from the South Shore hospital, where she was confined for several days having hnd her tonsils removed and at the present is feeling fine. Mrs. W. Thomas of Atchison ave., has been on the sick list for the past few days. Mrs. Bertha Lane of Myr,tle ave., was in Chicago on business last Thursday.
