Retailers need more merchandise to meet tthe increasing consumer demand but they insist on better quality, more service and more convincing reasons in placing .n order than ever before. There Is going to toe more business but to get It is going to require mere careful thought, better methods' and harder work than has been given In the past." This la a brief composite picture of the business conditions today and what is required to take idvantage of them as obtained at one of the largest salesmen's conventions ever held, when all the salesmen, (branch managers and special representatives of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company and its subsidiaries from all parts of the world gathered In Akron, Ohio last week; ' These men are in constant contace with the retail trade and business conditions in all parts o( the country calling upon 80,00 tire dealers in upwards of 50,000 cities and towns. They came direct from their territories to Akron to report upon conditions and study the company's products in process of manufacture. "A thorough knowledge of your product is the first essential in "the sales competition that you must meet today," Mr. H. S. Firestone, president of the company, told those attending the conference. "You cannot learn about the merits of our goods entirely from books but must teach yourself by going through the factory and studying each process, paying particular attention to the points that make our tires superior to all others. "The next most Important thing is a complete anaJyialtion of your territory. Know where the business Ipcated .ed cont-entra-te upon the best outlets. And do good business at all times. The Height reefdential section was under several methods; It wants to render a service to those with whom It does business and It is part of your Job to se that this attitnde on our part is thoroughly understood by your customers. It is service and good clean business that will determine success in the future." t Eacli one of the hundreds of salesmen attending the conference! spent hours in the factory with the workmen studying each detail of manufacture until it had been mastered. They were then given a course of study at an exposition of each of the various products manufactured by the company, being instructed upon the history and development of the tire industry from the source of the crude rubber and cotton fabric to the finished article. A feature of the exposition was a model tire dealers store, showing the proper placing of outdoor signs, decoration of windows, display of merchandise and a properly balanced stock. Here each salesman was lectured on the service he could render his customers. He was given directions and methods that could be passed on to the dealer for use in merchandising his g60ds. Particular attention was paid to costs and practical arrangements. Policies and other matters of company business were discussed at the general sessions and salesmen called upon to give their selling talk and the results they had obtained from the conference. Coldnel Leonard P. Ayres, vice president of the Cleveland Trust Company and Bishop ruMonlin of the Episcopal Church were two of the speakers At the evening sessions. A reception at yir. Firestone's home "Harbel Manor' closed the conference. As regards conditions there was a unanimity of opinion that business had improved and would continue to do so. The West and Northwest reported a resumption of lumbering and mining activities. The rise in prices of farm products was increasing the demand for. all manufactured articles In the middle west, according to the delegation from that section." The salesmen from the Southern districts reported a general revival of of buying as a result of the improvement in the cotton situation. With hard MIAMI WOMAN IS SLATED TO BE D. A. R. Business Keeps Good On Coast INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE) LOS ANGELES, Cal., May There in. no such thing as Spring recovery Of business in Los Angeles, for the reason that business here has never slackened. The Winter months show more activity than the Sum- j mer season, if anything, because of weather conditions, and there is no let-up in building or outdoor man- ' ufacturfing. For a long time Los Angeles, for this and other , reasons, has been the "white spot" in United States business, and the constantly increasing population at an astonishing rate keeps business proportionately growing. Bank clearings and building permits and valuations are larger almost every month than the preceding one, and every year shows a huge percentage increase in both of these barometers of trade. Construction of homes Is constantly necessary to take care of th- new-comers ftnd new factories are keeping pace, receiving an Added Impetus by the development of foreign trade through the new harbor.
