Don't Wait for the Next Blowout There's no economy in being handicapped with old tires. A pair or a set will save you all that worry but be sure to get the right kind. You can come pretty close to getting the number of miles I estimate for you, because I know the quality in 'the tires I sell. I also allow you a very liberal amount on your old tires. Ways to Reduce Wear and Tear of Your Car
The automobile owner who takes great pride in the performance of his car may be its worst enemy. Cars brought into service stations for adjustments or service work often show evidence of rough usage of which the owner-drivers are not even aware. As an illustration of the rough usage to which drivers may unconsciously subject their cars, it is pointed out that merely to show appreciative passengers how well the brakes work, drivers frequently apply thern suddenly when no reason exists for doing so. Not only does this put an unnecessary strain on the car itself, but the wear on the tires also is severe. Efficient brakes are a vital necestisy on a car, but the fact that his car is especially well equipped in this respect should not lead the driver to make unnecessary use of a safeguard that is intended to meet emergencies. Sudden application of the clutch is a common fault. Besides the bad effect on the car itself, this causes the wheels to spin momentarily and does more damage to the tires than
would result from considerable mileage with careful driving. Another striking example of hard usage is the speed with which some drivers travel across bad detours. Little time is gained by slamming into rough detours atthe same speed that has been used on the paved highways, but it is a certainty that handling a car in this careless manner will shorten its ife. Many owners do not appreciate the importance of washing their cars. Mud should never be permitted to remain on a car any longer than necessary. Practically all mud contains alkala and in some parts of the country it is almost clear alkali. Alkali will eat through the varnish and paint and expose the body metal to" rust. Excessive use of soap should be guarded against. Water should be used freely but not with too much force and washing of the hood, if it is heated, should be left until last. v Attention . to small details adds much to the life of a car and increases the pleasure and comfort to be deprived from motoring.
A VOICE FROM THE INDIAN WIGWAM
One of the signs of returning prosperity Is the increased sale of motorcycles, according to Al. Sliger, Indian motorcycle dealer. "Men are returning to work in large numbers and many of them are buying motorcycles because it gets them to work in a jiffy and is a most economical method of transportation. "For instance a worker living In Hammond can be on the Job In Indiana Harbor, Gary or South Chicago in less than flften minutes after he, leaves home in the morning. Then when he is all tired out from a heavy day's work he is at home in a jiffy, whereas It formerly required one to two hours to make tie trip, according to distance. And while he is getting home in Jig time, he is also refreshed by the brisk ride; his spirits are soaring instead of dragging, and his job is a joy, rather than a task.' '
These are some of the things brought out at the Indian Wigwam in favor of the motorcycle and It
may have something to' do with the
large number of sales made by Sliger Brothers. "Sounds good to again hear the hum of the motorcycle on the highways in the early hours of the mornings. You can read prosperity in face of the riders. The zest with which they step on the gas is an indisputable sign that all s well at his place of work." "The motorcycle business was never better is the word from Al. Sliger and C. F. Sliger, JL.ke coun-
! ty distributors for the Indian. With la product of recognized merit and I the proper Interpretation . of teervice these lads are working up a clientele that is noticeable to a great and busy region."
Practical Suggestions. Never drive on a retarded spark. Shellac will stop small leaks in radiators. Do not wait until a "squeak" Is heard before oiling. A tool in the car is worth thousands in the garage. Use distilled, and not "boiled" water In the battery. A wise motorist carries his license with him at all timaa. Scarcely one man in twenty remembers the number of his motor. Cover the spare tire and protect It from rain, sun and dirt. A motorist should be as -clever In backing a car as he is when driving forward. Two-thirds of all breakdowns are caused by improper or insufficient lubrication. Mud and dirt that have become hardened in the cells of the radiator should never be removed with wire or a tool. The thin cell walls are easily punctured and small leaks in the radiator invariably re
sult. Use water directed from a hose to clear the passages, with the stream guided from the engine side.
Camp 133 Now Open. One of the first summer resorts to open in this region this year will be Camp 133 on the banks of Deep river, five miles southeast of Gary. The camp is said to be open to all who come. The old frame depot at Pine Station will be mounted on wheels and rolled down the camp and installed by the side of the old historic Liverpool road, formerly the Sauk trail and turned Into a temple of justice. The city hall will stand within a stone's throw of Lake county's first court house, when the county seat was at Liverpool. Many people from the cities of the Calumet region go to Camp 1S3 for the summer, and It is said, they always go back the following year. This year there will be a new bridge, a new cinder entrance, a regular restaurant open at all times and a good time assured for all.
