TOM TAGUI 'LAYS II LEGION TEAM

Tommy Tagne, ono of the best tackstop3 the city of Hammond has turned out in recent years, will fflvo his basaball knowledg-o to the Hammond American Lesion baseball team. The signing: of Tag-ue by Post Athletic Officer Chayken means that the Leg-Ion nine is out to give the city of Hammond the best ball team that the Legion officials can ret together. Tagrue. besides being an able catcher Is a dandy outfielder and with the stick the local World "war veteran can always be counted on for extra base hits. Besides the signing of Tague. the Legion management Is hot after Sammy Creasbaum, one of the best twirlers in the state. Thus far Creasbaum has not affixed his "John Hancock" to a contract, but . being a Rood Legioneer, it Is expected that the former Scatena fl:ncrer will fret into the fold before ne.xt Sunday's contest with the Gary American Legion team at Harrison r.ark. Sunday's game netween the two rival Lep-?on nines is causing great interest throughout the county. The Gary Legion members are willing to back their team to the end, while tlie sfirne spirit exists in Hammond. Rivalry between the two cities has bf;en keen for years, and nothing will suit Hammond "better than to beat the much-touted Gary aggregation. In football, baseball, basket, ball and track the Steel City for the past few. years has always had the number of Hammond teams, but the local players on the Legion team think it Is going to be a different story Sunday, and that big fact remains to be seen. Lesion officers are dickering for a band to play at the game Sunday with tbe probability that tie "wind jammers" will be on hand to liven things r.p. every evening with Captain Han-f ion's team. The mayor may have seen better days, but looks good to the police force, who may try to sign him up for the season. 1 Last night's practice game against the Stars at the West Hammond ball park was the best practice session the vets have had in weeks, the fielding and batting was faultless, 'an indication that the locals are ready to trim Gary. At least we hope so.

GENTLEMAN JIM" HAD NOTHING ON GENTLEMAN JACK Jack Dempsey as he appears in his act at the New York hippodrome. HEW BRITISH CAR'S DEBUT AT SPEEDWAY SPECIAL TO THE TIMES IOTTAXAPOLIS, Ind., May 3. The British colors will preceed the annual band parade before the start of the tenth annual 600-mile race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tuesday. May 30. Although Louis Coatalen is expected to make an eleventh hour entry of a team of Sunbeams, from Wolverhampton, England, it was not a certainlty that there would be an English competitor. Any doubt was dispelled recently with the receipt T. .E. Me Myers, secretary-manager of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway of a cable from London, entering a Bentley car. This will 'be the debut of a Bentley in American racing. The entry is made by "W. Douglas Hawkes, the engineer and designer of the car, who may drive the racer in the dash for $100,000 on Memorial Day. Reports from England imply that Haweks will make J-ules Goux and his pair of Ballot entries hurry to defend the European honors In the International classls. Goux, one of the craftiest pilots who ever came over to represent France, has two new Ballot mounts, but has not announced his team mate. Lest year In the French Grand Prix, Gour took one of the amall two-litre (123 cubic inch) Ballots and drove It into third piaoe. The car did not have the speed of several it defeated but Goux had the skill to outgeneral his speedier competitors. Goux was also; the first foreigner to win an Indianapolis race, taking tha 1918 event with a Peugeot. Gomx has a warm spot in his heart for Indianapolis, he was unsuccessful In his last attempt to win the 1910 Her Deadly K. SIXSMITH, the man iW. who has trained senators end presidents, and who taught Roosevelt to box, has a wholesome respect for on--f his pupils, 2Ilss CyTcna Van Gordon, the junoesque prima donna ol the Chicago Opera Company. p For Miss Van Gordon, besides beinjjj able to "knock 'em cold" with her voice, packs a rather vicious left. She believea In boxing for girls, and when Mr. SixsmiUi. who under the ring name of Jimmy Murphy had fought his way up through the lightweight ranks, came to Chicago to start a boxing class for girls, among the first to enter the velvet ring with him was Miss Van Gordon. Previously she had taken lessons from IJennv "ianer, the "Tipton Slasher," instructor of the manly art at the Chicago Athletic Club. ' "Like this?" she asked Mr. Sbcc mith. A moment later the trainer was stretched out on the floor. He had left his guard open, and his fair pupil had 6ccn her advantapc, and had sent in her deadly K. O. blow, "Boxing is the best exercise in the world for breath control," the says. "I'd certainly recommend it for other singers."

PEPPER iW AFTER KUME

BT D.VVI3 J. WLASH STAFF CORRESPONDENT I. N. SERVICE NEW YORK, May 3 If "you have nothing to say. John Patrick Kllbane, speal now or forever hold your peace. They are supposed to have your ! 4 word of mouth promise, John, to meet the winner of the Pepper Martin-Babe Herman clash In a featherweight ahainpionship bout, and strange as it may seem, there was a winner and a very convincing one at that. He is "Vincent Pepper Martin," of Brooklyn, who lulled the Babe to sleep with a left to the Jaw in the first round at Madison Square Garden last night. . Xo fluke about that punch, John, the peppery one had first prepared Herman for the worst with another arc-like left to the same Jaw and Herman had sat down for a count of six to think it over. When he arose, slant-eyed, Martin measured him for a right and missed by an inch, then righted himself, quickly and swung that left again. It was all over. The Babe was out like a gutted candle and he stayed out for all of five minutes. It was a clean knock out. Xow Martin must be accepted as the logical candidate, and seriously John, there is no reason why you shouldn't seize that proposition by the lapel and hang right on. If you haven't gone back beyond recall, you should outpoint this Pepper fellow in any kind of a buck and wing up to fifteen rounds. So it Is all right on that score. And if you are concerned about the purpose. Just consider the fact that the bout would arouse the cash customers to a frenzy. This Pepper person is waiting, and since you will have to fight some time, it might as well be with some one who isn't too good. Major League Clubs Standing AMEUICAX LKAGl'E W L Pet.
