PLOW POTATO GROUND EARLY

BY COUNTY AGENT V. A PLACE. CROWN POINT, Ind., May 2 Potato soil should be plowed deep and early reworked frequently un-

til planting time. For the early

crop planting should be begun in Lake county as soon as the ground becomes dry enough to work. Our best growers have found that the earliest planting give the best yields. The late plantings should be placed in the ground in this county between June 19 and 25, to secure best results. A distance of not more than 36 inches between rows with pieces dropped every foot for the early crop and 15 to 18 inches for late, will give good yileds. Seed pieces should be cut Just previous to planting. It is very important that plenty of seed per acre be used as large sized pieces give more vigorous plants which greatly increase yields. Most farmers in cutting their seed potatoes cut into pieces of one or two eyes. However the number of eyes is not so important provided every piece has one or two good eyes, as the size of the seed piece. It has been found that where peeling gave a yield of 25 bushel per acre, two ounce pieces gave two hundred bushel yields under the same growing conditions. Potato growers generally recommend a piece about two ounces in weight or aibout the size of a hen's egg. Where the furows are opened with a single shovel, only a few should be opened at a time and the seed pieces dropped in them and covered before the soil has time to dry out. Many poor stands are caused by opening the furrows and allowing the soil to become hot and dry before covering. In planting them use at least 12 bushels of seed per acre and be sure and plant good size seed pieces--as large as hen's eggs are best. Plant in moist soil and cover pieces as soon as they are dropped. These are the secrets of many good stands.

person Is saying and can carry on an intelligent conversation. Once she

"hears" a voice through her fingers she does not forget it. By holding her fingers over the receiver she can carry on a conversation by telephone. Through her finger tips she "read" the headlines of a newspaper and by rubbing her nose over a page she told how many persons were in a

photograph. She could tell that two were men and one was a woman, she said, because there were white spaces between the men's legs." Miss Higgins told the colors of skeins of silk, the shades of hats handed up by women in the audience and the denominations of paper money. "It Just smells dif

ferent," was her explanation. Physicians pronounced the demonstration of her strange powers given by Miss Huggins as the most remarkable they ever had witnessed. They took every precaution to guard against illusory tactics and all of them, among them many of the leading physicians and surgeons of Chicago, pronounced the girl's gift genuine.

Chaulmoogra oil, which has benn restoring many sufferers from leprosy to health, is now used in the treatment of tuberculosis laryngit, is. Dr. R. M. Lukens, of Jefferson Hospital and Henry Phlpps Institute, Philadelphia, has treated patients for the last year by spraying the oil into their diseased larynges. While the treatment is not all that is to be desired, it is not unpleas-

ant or distressing and gives better results than cocaine or other drugs previously used. New York Evening Post.
