Europe Retards Business Boom Say Government Officials

An Immediate boom In the United States U unlikely because of Europe's t4y eonomic reconstruction, but Fundamental conditions are much better and there Is every reason to believe that they -will continue to Improve steadily, though slowly. Thi3 was the opinion expressed today by officials of the Department f Commerce, basing: their predictions on reports of increased production, more stable prices and larger export trade. "While Europe continues to strug- ! 'with economic reconstruction, improvements in the United States are noted by the Department of Commerce as follows:

Iron and Steel Total exports in March were the largest since March of last year and there was also a big Increase in Imports. Non-Ferrous Mtals "With a total of 80.853,000 pounds, copper exports showed a marked gain over recent months and registered the largest total for any month in nearly two years. Tin and sine exports were also higher. Automobiles The production in March was the largest of any month In the year. Fuels Petroleum industry setting new high records In all directions, stocks amounting to 220.523,000 barrels, which Is far. In excess of anything heretofore recorded. Newsprint Output larger with prices relatively ateady and exports showing a marked increase. Building Material Production and shipments of lumber, brick and cement and other materials Increased in response to greater volume of construction. Foodstuffs Remarkable increase recorded In exports of wheat, flour, corn, oats and cold storage produects. Wholesale prices it was stated, seem to be stabilized at an average of about 30 per cent above the rrewar prices, thejugn slight Increases have been noted. Retail prices, on the other hand, continue to decline. The greatest drop has been in the cost of food although other Items decreased slightly.

Authorities linked the coming maternity of the girl with the reason for the slayer's caching the body near the murder scene, then carrying it to the basement. , Chemical analysis to determine if undertaker's preservative was uspd loomed as the newest development in the case. Emprasis was also placed on the location of an ice plant two blocks from the par- : onage. John C. VCayman. former fiance uf the dead girl, who confessed her i.etrayal. was released, but told to remain in the city. He established t;n aibi by proving ho was visiting his mother at Palestine, 111., but it was pointed out that he rould have been in Hoopeston and maintain i.ls alibi. Several new witnesses were examined yesterday by Police Chief Bogart. The father was present at hi inquest, but refused comment.
