9 Churches And 8 Schools Furnish Meeting Places For Hammond Boy Scouts

SOUTH AMERICAN MEET TO SETTLE CHILE-PERU ISSUE

The Boy Scouts of Hammond meet In nine different churches end elrht different Schools. Four ofj the church troops meet In Catholic; churches. There Is scarcely aj creed or nationality that Is not rep- i

resented in some of the troops. Sccmtlng'a program reaches them all. Because of -the scout progTam most boys with cout training are more reverent than those without. Every church should fuse their cout. A Scout who la good In

school Is good In his troop. May-i

wood school has thre scout troops meeting In their gymnasium at different times. Mr. Hldy's troop at this school haa scarcely two toys of the ame nationality Ln the troop. Several of the teachers have said, "there Is an entirely different atmosphere among the hoys of our school since the troop started." The scouts at Washington and Irving schools kept the aide-walks shoveled after neaTly every anow storm. The boys at May-wood school gave up basketball in order to proctice fire building by friction, and It Is no unusual sight at recess time to see a number of them practicing signaling with their wig-wag flags. SCOUTS IX B4 COCYTRIE9 The Boy Scout Movement Is now organized ln 64 countries and dominions, more or less along the lines made familiar to us in this country toy the Boy Scouts of America. Leaders of these many national groups see In the world-wide growth of the

movement, elements that make the better understanding between nations, for better relationships and for world peace. Prestde.nt Harding himself linked the Boy Scouts and world peace ln the radio message which he sent out from the White House, February 7th, congratulating the Boy Scouts of America on their Twetfth Anniversary. While differing local conditions prevent a complete uniformity of activities throughout the world, national leaders believe that much of the scout program, particularly its ethical policies, may be standardized and it is hoped by the officials of the movement In this country that at the International meeting in Paris in July, steps may be taken to create an international organization sufficiently substantial to give ' deflnlte expression to the elements In the movement that make for a harrnon'.ejjs world. . STATISTICS REVEAL HEROES In tht past eleven years 541 Boy Scouts have been awarded honor medals for risking their lives in effort!, usually successfully, to save others, and 2:5 other scouts have received letters of commendation for similar action with lesser peril. The year 1921 shows the highest number of aywards of any year a total of 147 honor medals, three being of gold, 64 of silver and 30 of bronze. The scouts who thus have stepped

"On more than one occasion." says

Dan Beard, famous author and outdoors man, in making his annual report as Chairman of the National Court of Honor, "the short typewritten accounts of a tragedy have caused the eyes of more .than one member of the Court to grow dim with moisture; yet that Court is composed of tough outdoor men. hardened by years of exposure to danger of all kinds, men who themselves have often faced death with the grim courage of the American pioneer." Sir. Beard states that tbe records chow that the scout preparedness for saving life is becoming yearly a more vital and significant feature of the movement. It is the practice of the Boy Scouts of America, ln case the scout loses Ihls life in an effort to save another, to award the honor medal to the mother or other nearest living relative. EXCOl'RAGE SCOUTMASTERS At tha last regular monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce of New York, a report and resolution were unanimously adopted recommending members and others "that their properly qualified employes be encouraged and given the time to be trained to become scautmasters and to act in that capacity, believing that such action will be helpful both to the men themselves and to their regular work, and also to the boys of Che community." The report was submitted by the Committee on Commercial Education. After reviewing the elements in the Boy Scout program which make for (better boys and better citizens by taking care of their spare time as well as their superfluous -nergy, teaching them to learn In a vay which builds iupboth mind and iody. and gives Initiative, reliance

Corrosive Sublimate Solution Gives Best Results in Controlling Disease BT COUNTY AGENT V. A. PLACE. CROWN POINT, Ind., April 28. Scab is quite common ln Lake county and causes considerable loss. While many farmers have partly controlled this disease with formaldehyde, the corrosive au'bllmate

treatment more effectively handles it as well &s black scurf and black leg and so should be used ln this county. Growers should not forget to treat event Certified seed stocks as these are liable to have a small amount of scab and block scurf on the outside. To treat potatoes quickly and efftctlvely secure three old vinegar or whiskey barrels and ibore an inch hole in the' sides of two of them near the bottom so that the solution can be withdrawn easily from them after each treatment. Mount two of these barrels on a substantial platform 16 Inches from the ground. The third barrel is the one in -which to make the

poison solution. Fill It almost fuH' of water, near the other two. Then dissolve 7 ounces of powdered corrosive sublimate ln a quart glass can. The water In the glass can should be boiling hot as the poison dissolves much more readily In hot -water. After the corrosive sublimate is dissolved, pour It into the 50 gallons of water ln the barrel. Now fill the other two (barrels level full of potatoes and pour in the poison solution until the potatoes in both barrels are covered. Allow them to soak for an hour and a half, then withdraw the poison solution thru the holes at the bottom and pour back into the original barrel. Fill up the garrel again until it is as full as before and add another ounces and a half of poison. Meanwhile the potatoes are taken out of the barrels and spread out to dry and the barrels are again tilled and this process of treatment continued. After four treatments are made the fifth treatment is given without adding any new poison to the old solution. Thorough tieatment when potatoes are dormant, along with crop rotation will largely control scab and black scurf. If the tuber uae sprouted cut down the length of treatment to a half hour. After the potatoes are all treated drain the remainder of the solution into the) ground aa it Is very poisonous and should never be left where animals might drink It. Using the same proportions of the solution smaller amounts may be treated ln an ordinary candy bucket or other wooden vessel. Do not use galvanized wash tubs or other metal containers, as the poison corodes these.

Nash Leads the TVbrld in Motor Car Value

NASH

m

IT IS interesting to observe to what lengths Nash goes in painstaking shop practice, because it bears directly upon the quality that has earned Nash cars their nation-wide esteem. To make certain that Nash cylinders are absolutely true, a stream of cold water is circulated through the water jackets as the barrels are machined. This prevents heat being generated by the operation of machining, and it is heat that expands the cylinder and causes the variations in size which distinguish inferior cylinders from Nash cylinders.
