FIRST QUARTER SHOWS BUSINESS INCREASE
That the expected upward turn In gtneral business conditions has berun, and is actually a reality, rather than an expectation, Is the opinion expressed by Colonel Frank B. Smith, president and general manager of the Republic Motor Truck Company, Inc., In an interview given to press representatives. "Hecords of sales during the first quarter of this year show clearly that general business conditions are Improving, for It goes without saying that transportation is a reliable barometer of business fluctuations. "Truck sales In February were BO per cent greater than In the first month of the year, and March continued to show healthy growth by registering & sales volume 50 per cent greater than February. So far this month inquiries and sales In
dlcate that April will climb above March by an even higher percentage of increase. These facts may be taken as an indication that business in other lines is also on the Ion? trrpected climb toward normalcy after the period of deflation and business stagnation. "We learn from reliable sources that other manufacturers in the automotive field are experiencing similar gains In sales volume, and It is only reasonable to expect that with the rapid opening of the spring road construction activities in all sections, labor, materials and equipment will have to be purchased in increasing Quantities.' Following this as a natural consequence, will be a very large demand for motor buses, it having been clearly proven that the public Is heartily In favor of this mode of transportation."
FRED GRANGER DOES SOME CUTTING UP
Fred GrangeT cashed onto a tip from a friend one time. Fred was In th motor express business. The friend told him of the possibilities in the auto paint and trimming business. Every car some time needs refinishing. Automobile depreciation is rapid because an automobile Is expected to do the Impossible. Many times it does do the impossible and consequently the depreciation. The tip transferred Granger from the motor express business into a line that finds him right at home. Siruje he took charge of the Hammond Auto Faint and Top concern, things have assumed an air of permanency there. The shop works at .capacity and is recognized as one of the most successful institutions of its kind.
Granger was sure of his step when he accepted the tip. Besides creating a fine business he has also created a handsome bunch of friends (notice it reads a handsome bunch not q bunch of handsome friends). About a year ago he secured the agency for the Oldsmobile four and eight models. He states the Oldsmobile is gaining prestige with each day and that his sales are unusually good, so good this make of car is among the leading sellers today, he says. So Freddy Granger seems to be among those who are chopping their niche mere or lees unnoticed, perhaps, but if real effort receives its reward Fred Granger will probably be there when the diplomas are pass ed around.
Tribute to the Automobile By Gene Stratton Porter
"The advent of the amtomobile has opened the eyes of the world to the fact that all the Joy of life was not to be found under a roof. o one thing in the civilization of America ever did so much for the welfare of the great common body of the people of this country, as the car which took the over-worked, tired housewife out of her kitchen and whisked her to the seashore, to the lakes, to the .brooks and the forest where the sun was shining and the cardinal singing good cheer. People learned speedily that after working all week It was not necessary for mother to stay at home and make Sunday the hard
est day of the week, the day on which ehe cooked for her family and neighbors and friends. The family has learned that it may throw a few things into a basket and go to the woods, while father makes a fire and boils the coffee, brother may spread the rugs, sister may set the table, and mother may have time to realize that her feet are a means 'of locomotion rather than a source of pain. I certainly would cut the building and furnishing of a home to such an ex-' tent as to admit at the very earliest possible moment, the purchase and upkeep of a car."
COME EARLY AND AVOIDTHE RUSH "With the approach of warm weather the automobile business has received a decided impetus, with a rush for new and old cars. Many dealers are sold out on used cars. The demand for used stuff has been unusually good. The demand for new cars Is surprisingly good. The demand exceeds production on many new models and prospects are doom ed to wait all the way from a month to six weeks. Buy early , and avoid the rush la a hackneyed saying, ibut applie well In automobile buying just now.
GETTING MORE TIREMILEAGE A little puncture of the tire epidermis becomes the reception hall for particles of glass, "stone, water and sand. Go over your tires or.ee a week and extract the little particles that are waiting to be Invited inside. Fill up the holes with tire dough. This substance can be secured at any up-to-date accessory store. If there - Is a large cut or bruise take the tire to a responsible tire man and have it repaired at once. Observing these rules you have a right to expect abundant mt1e from wour tires.
