COMBAT
FAMINE
WITH SPINELESS CACTUS Edible Plant to fca Taken To Russia in Plan of Burbank.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE! SAN FKANC1SCO, Apru m. The spineless cactus, developed by iAither Burbank. amous plant wizard, is to be taken to Southern Russia as a means of combating famine. This was revealed here today during Burbank's annual visit to the "city" as guest of the wild flower show. The spineless castus. which is highly edible when properly prepared, has already stood off the grim spectre of famine In East India' so successfully that the government there is now engaged In planting it. Hundreds of thousands owe their lives to the plant and special recognition was recently given Burbank by the East Indian government for his work n developing it. Not only Is the fruit of the spineless cactus appetizing but the stalk may be boiled In oil and eaten. The spineless cactus was originally developed by Burbank as a means of providing food for herds on desert ranges. It's value as a food soon became known. The fruit has been popularized under the name of Turkish tig and as such Is served at leading hotels. Burbank laid to rest today hopes of devotees of Bacchus that a "cocktall plant" might be developed. "Plant life produces nothing to correspond to that elixir." he said. "The human stomach produces all the alcohol it needs. The worse the disorder the more alcohol It manufactures."

CONGRESS
CAN REST EOT NOW
By MILDRED MORRIS I STAFF CORRESPONDENT I. N. SERVICE BALTlJdOKK. Aid., April 26. Congress may breathe more easily today. The League of 'Women Voters, with Its 7,000,000 women votes, will not aa an organization use the big stick on candidates in the next congressional election. For fear politics may wreck tha league, lta leaders have given out the word that the "handa off" policy muat be continued. According to the program, if a resolution ia introduced or an amendment to the constitution offered to permit action opposing or endorsing candidates, it will fee tabled. Thla comes straight from Mary Garrett Hay of New York, one of the powers in the organization.
