THE TIMES
Automobile Laws
East Chlcagro, Indiana. .' April 22. 1922. ATTOMOBILK lWS The following is a simplified digest of some of the laws to be re. merabered In operating automobiles or other vehicles on the streets and highways of this stats and this city. All rehlcles traveling upon highways must give the right-of-way at street or highway intersections to other vehicles approaching from the right but have the right of way over those approaching from the left. Police vehicles, Fire Department, vehicles transporting United States Mail and Ambulances have the right of way over other vehicles, but neither of these appear to have any preference over any of the others, except as above stated. It is a violation of law for a driver to stop suddenly, slow down or attempt to turn without signalling his intention to so do. with outstretched arm or otherwise to those following, if you intend to turn to the left you should extend your arm in a horizontal position in the rear. If you intend to turn to the right, extend your arm with the fore arm raised at right angles. If you intend to stop, extend your arm and move it up and down. The driver of a closed vthicle should indicate his intention of turning or stopping by sounding the horn. A violation of any of the above rules on conviction will cause you to be fined not less than Fire Dollar or more than Twenty Five Dollars. Every motor vehicle used upon the public highways shall be provided xrlth good brakes suitable horn or other device and shall, during the period of one half hour after sunset to one half hour before sun ' rise display at least two lights on the front and one red light visable from the rear. The motor must not be left running when machine is standing without an attendant. Persons driving motor vehicles approaching a crossing outside of city limits shall slow down and sound his horn in such a manner as to give notice of his approach. Every commercial vehicle must be so constructed and loaded that the operator at all times shall have an unobstructed view of the highway to the rear and the sides and shall be equiped with a mirror or reffecotr adjusted to give the operator a clear reflected view of the highway to the rear. j It is unlawful for the operator of a motor vehicle to pass a street car, or lnterrurban at a distance of less than twenty feet to the side on the streets on any city or town when the car has stopped to allow
passengers to enter or leave the car during the time the car is stopped for that purpose and it Is your duty when you- approach such street car or lnterrurban thus stopped where the width or condition of the road will not permit you to pass at a distance of at least twenty feet, to stop your vehicle not less than six feet from the rear of such a car or lnterrurban and wait until the highway is clear and the street car shall have started. For an oversight of this kind ycfu may be fined one hundred dollars. RAIIWAT CROSSIVGS It la your duty when approaching a railway crossing to slow down and bring your machine perfectly under control. At a crossing where there is not watchman a flagman it Is your duty under the law and for your own safety to STOP, LOOK AXD LISTEN' before you enter upon the tracks. When you approach a i rossing where there is a flagman it is your duty to slow down and watch the flagman.
When you approach a crossing where gates are operated you should bring your machine under perfect control, look and listen because It often happens that the gates may not be operating although a train may be approaching. SPEED The speed of automobiles is limited as follows: The speed at all times of a motor vehicle on a public highway should be limited to what is reasonable and prudent, having regard to the traffic on the highway at that particular time and to so use your vehicle as not to endanger people using the street at the same time. But it is positively against the law to operate a motor vehicle at any time on a street that passes trrough a closely built up business partion of an incorporated town and city at a speed to exceed ten miles per hour; in the residence portion of such town or city not exceed fifteen miles per hour, outside of a closely built up business and residence sections within rftch town or city in excess of twenty miles per hour and upon public highways outside of such town or city the limit 13 twenty-five miles per hou'r. If you exceed thts s.peed limit you violate the law and such fact is prima facie evidence that you are negligent. This applies to boulevards , which are not intended for speedways. If you violate this speed law you are criminally liable and possibly liable in a civil action for damage. This does not signify that you may at all times use your vehicle in the above discribed districts at such maximum speed but it means that if you ever exceed these rates yen are crimlnsly liable because at many times it woud be unlawful in view of the traffic, to drive at such speed. It is unlawful to park any motor vehicle within a distance of fifteen feet of the intersection of the curb line of streets except where street cars stop and at such a place you should not park within fifty feet of the curb line of the intersecting streets. Tou shoud not park within fifteen feet of the intersecting curb line of any alley nor within ten feet of any fire hydrant. In parking your machine it shoud be left standing parallel with the curb and within one foot thereof. Eefore entering upon the following
treets you must bring your vehicle to a full stop: Michigan Ave.. Cedar St., Chicago Ave., Forsyth Ave., and ,
Grapevine Blvd. Tou must also come to a full stop in entering upon any street marked by the city authorities by a sign to stop. The city may designate !by signs the zones in which it is unlawful to park. It is unlawful to turn any vehicle upon the street or avenue except the turn be made at the intersection of a street. At Intersections of street or other places where a traffic officer is stationed It is your duty to watch the officer ond to obey his signal. It 1s the duty of the city police to enforce these laws within the city
and to arrest violators when view they eee a violation of
traffic law. CITV REGULATIONS. Persons operating motor or other vehicles meeting another veliiicle it is the duty of each to turn to the right of the center of the highway so as to pass without interference. A person operating a motor vehicle overtaking another vehicle should pays on the left side thereof and as soon as he has passed and it is practical, he should turn to the rifht so as to allow
free passage on his left. The person to be passed on notice or warning should turn his vehicle to the right and give ample room for the passing vehicle if the condition of the highway, requires him to do so
in order to letthe passing vehicles
go by. The statute governing meet7 and passing vehicles is shamefully violated many time by truck drivers who for wilfullness prevents the passage of more speedy cars. For the first offense against this statute the guilty one is liable to be fined twenty-five dollars, for a second offense fifty dollars and may have his certificate or license revoked for a period not exceeding three months or imprisoned in the county jail. Any person operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated Is liable
to a fine of fifty dollars. Any per
son operating a motor vehicle caus
ing an injury to person or proper
ty who leaves the place of injury without stopping and giving his name and address and license num
ber to injured party or police offl
cer or reporting the same to police
station is guilty of a felony, punishable by a fine of not more than five hundred dollars and imprisonment in the state prison not exceeding two years or tooth fine and prisonment. On a secoud offense he may be imprisoned for five years. Respectfully submitted, J. W. BRISSET. City Attorney.
DinnerStories
The revival of "Pinafore" in London recalls a good old story. Onct "Pinafore" became a favorite u London, after its initial failure
on any
everybody began saying, "Wha. never? Well, hardly ever!" One morning a stern Londor. editor called his staff together and delivered the following oration: "Now, listen; i never want that damned expression used in this paper again. In yesterday's issue it occurred by actual count twenty
times m as many articles.' inereupon a staff voice from novhere in particular piped up: "What, never?" The editor surrendered. "Well, hardly ever," he replied, and left tLe room. , Colonel Breckinridge and Major Foindexter, Kentucky gentlemen of the old school, noticed something unusual about their favorite beverage, but they disagreed as to what it might be. "Very fine liquah, suh," observed the colonel to the major, "but it has a foreign flavor," he added. "You ah right, suh; it has e foreign flavor," replied the major; "I should say, suh, it has an iron flavor, ' he added. "You ah mistaken, suh; it has the flavor of leather," insisted the colonel. When the hogshead from which their libation came was empty, a tack with a leather top was found on the bottom of the receptacle. Mrs. Carrol and her two-year-old eon, Jimmie, were calling on Mrs. St. Claire. Mrs. St. Claire caressingly took Jimmie on her lap, and looking fondly into his eyes, asked: "Where did you get those big brown eyes?" "Aw." responded Jimmie. "they
come with my faca."

Eight years ago, Cadillac introduced Am erica's first eight-cylinder automobile power plant, the V-Type Cadillac Engine. It achieved an immediate and a brilliant success, later enhanced by distinguished service with the American Expeditionary Forces in France. Today, after years of painstaking development and refinement, the Cadillac Engine attains an extraordinary degree of perfection in the Type 61. Not only Cadillac owners, but practically all motorists praise its superb power flow and its consummate quietness of operation. They refer in glowing terms to its de
pendability, emphasizing that it functions with a constancy and a certitude that suggest infallible performance. But the great and the cardinal triumph of the Cadillac engine is that it perpettutttt this service it ctntmuts running surely and serenely throughout its long life. The motoring public admires this eightcylinder power plant, not only as a Cadillac achievement, but as the splendid eridence of American supremacy ia multi-cylinder construction. In it, they see typified the qualities that cause the Cadillac car to be regarded as the Standard of the World.
