BT KENNETH TODILL STAFF CORRESPONDENT I. N. SERVICE NEW YORK, April 20. Lady Xancy Astor, first Englishwoman II. P., who In her "deb" days was "n of the beautiful Langhorne sisters of Virginia," returned to the land of her birth yesterday as vivacious and lovely as -when she flowered la the society of the Old Dominion. As the giant ocean liner Olympic passed quarantine a horde, of reporters and photographers boarded the vessel and dashed down the gang-plank leading to her suite. At the bottom stood Lady Nancy. "Oh, husband, husband, come and help me!"' he cried laughingly. Lord Astor came forward, tout was j lost in the shuffle as his dainty wife;
was half carried up to the upper deck for photographs. "Entering parliament for the first t'.mo was a picnic compared to this," the said gayly, as she leaped girl like to the top of a ventilation shaft so that the "movie' men could picture her. Although her pretty head was crammed full with opinions of' the woes of the world, she looked nothing of the politician as she stood with the breeze whipping her auburn hair? under her ?blue Tam-o-Shanter. S'.te was garbed in a wine colored morning gown, edged with Rumanian embroidery. Over her slender shoulders were draped opera like a black cloak of Persian lamb, with white pipings. Her cheeks were rosy real rose at that. "Now I haven't come over here to make any attempt to get America into better relations with England or Europe," she explained, tossing her cloak backward. "I'm not going to tell anyone their duty, statesmen or otherwise. "I'v e not quite lost my head or my sense of humor. "I'm not on any particular mission here." She glanced from face to face to Impress her words on all hearers. "I'm here because I was invited to attend the Pan-American conference and attend the Women Voters' contention in Baltimore, where we shall discuss matters of Interest to women all over the world." "Wsls America right In keeping out of the Genoa conference?" she was asked. "I ask you," she retorted quickly, "if England was right to attend the Washington conference and make
the world a little better and less war-like and to help remove the burden of taxation that is so oppressive? "As to whether Europa would have to straighten lis affairs before America participates in foreign conferences well It seems to me that when a house is on Are that it is a wise neighbor who helps put out the fire." "Does England object to America being paid out of German reparations for the army of occupation expenses on the Rhine?" "As I see It England la quite willing that America get her share," she flashed. England Is going to pay her debt to America. Of course, this will take some time." She hesitated an Instant, then arching her head, her eyes flashed as she continued: "If England had not loaned money to the Allies to enable them to continue fighting, she would not have had to borrow from the United States."
In addition to filing the office of mayor in the city of Sallna. Etah, Miss Stena Scorup teaches school fire days a week and between times fills In by editing the school Journal.
