As License To Allow Ski Trip
INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICES WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont., April-- Are skis a vehicle? This was the questions that stump ed Rangers Lee Webb and Roy Frazier at the West Yellowstone enterance when the first tourists of pf the 1923 season applied for admittance to Yellowstone National- Park And if skis were vehicles and must carry licenses, just where, on each of the three pretty girls applicants, would a fellow paste the familiar license sticker which regulations require be placed on the windshield? Obviously the situation demanded a compromise, and so, when the first fair visitor of the gala golden anniversity year of Yellowstone passed through the gateway of the parkas forerunners of the thou sands to follow, they were duly checked in and licensed the green stickers that said so were jauntily pasted squarely between their shoulder blades.
The Misses Louise Yunker and Selma Miller, of Salt Lake City, and Miriam Brooks, of Pocatello. Idaho, were the first travelers of the Yellowstone year, and they passed througrh the entrance at "West Yellowstone aften an unusual journey. A JOURNEY OF ADVENTURE. Where the tourists of the summertime make the park in a brief scenic trip of a few hours from Salt Lake City these girls took four and a half days. They traveled first by private car. Then they rode with the gigantic rotary plows in the spectacular battle through huge drifts with the snow fighters who opened the Union Pacific Yellowstone road after its winter's disuse. And for the last lap, with the long battle through the accumulated winter snow won, they clambered down from the controller cab of the rotary, donned skis and Journeyed into the park to break the first trail of the year to see the wonderland in a white beauty that no traveled of the summer can even imagine.
N LORDS? 'TIS
GOOD JOKE, SAYS DUKE
[INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE] LONDON April-- "When women enter the House of Lords I shall Launch," says the Duke of Rutland father of Lady Diana Manners. " If any of them sit near me I shall be able to guess thier feelings, and we will all give way to merriment together. And so when the report of the committee recommending Lady Jihonda's claim comes before us I shall probably play the coward-or the discreet- and not vote either way.
"If I were a woman and wanted to annoy the peers I would take any seat in the Lords just to see what happened. It any provide the privileged with some amusement, and it certainly give them en-
try to a very comfortable club. from their homes by our debates, from their homes by our debates, because our sittings rarely occupy more than a few minutes. And that in itself may prove an attraction. I don't know Lady Rhondda althrough I believe she is an excellent business woman and active and clever. I don't believe that in the case of the House of Commons the admittance of women has added anything in the way of dignity, charm or usefulness."

[INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE] DEFIANCE, OHIO-With court House habitues gathered in his offlee, visions of a hidden fortune dancing before the eyes of those assembled, Probate Judge C. W. Palmer wielded a wrecking bar on the two giant padlocks holding- the lid of a brass-bound chest. Brought from the West thirty'seven years ago, it was claimed the chest had been unopened since that time
as the highways of church life furnish much in the way of wit and humor. He proceeded to relate the story of a certain rector's cook. One evening they allowed her to choose the hymn for family prayers. When the ceremony was over the vicar's wife said to her: "That was a very nice hymn you chose this evening, coo"k!" "Yes, mum," said the cook, "it's the number of my policeman." "There was one man whose life wa3 perfect," said the preacher who had taken charge of the Sunday school class in the absence of the regular teacher. "Can any of you tell me who he was?" Little Johnny Burke, who had been following the activities of a fly attempting to go through the window, stuck a dirty fist in the air, and the preacher smiled at him to give his answer. "Sure. He was mamma's first husband."
breaking off the padlocks, the judge drew forth Three musty vests, a bundle of patent medicine advertisements several pictures of pretty women. dressed in old-fashioned costumes and a sock filled with letters.
"Yes," said the old man to his visitor, "I am proud of my girls and would like to see them comfortably married, and as I have made a little money they will not go penniless to their husbands. "There is Mary, twenty-five years old, and a really good girl, I shall give her $1,090 when she married. Then comes Bet, who won't see thirty-five again. I shall give her $3,000, and the man who takes Eliza, who is forty, will have $3,000 with her." The young man reflected a while and then asked, "You haven't one about fifty, have you?"
