Reports that a $100,000 "slush fund" had been raised to "buy" favorable verdicts in two recent trials of labor leaders on criminal charges in Chicago were being Investigated today by the State's Attorney. A man, said to be high in labor circles. Is being sought, it was alleged, as the chief of the band of "fixers" involved in the raising and dispensing of the fund. The recent confession of Henry J. Smith, a Juror In the panel which acquitted Simon O'Donnell, former head of the Chicago .Building Trades Council of charges of ' graft and cxtoratlon, that he was paid $1,000 for a verdict of acquittal, is said to have led to the uncovering of the huge "slush fund." The leader who is sought Is said to have disappeared after Smith's confession. Four others in addition to the fugitive leader, are said to bs under surveillance.

Woodside, of the Veterans of Foreijrn Wars, thanks leaders in the House for their leadership in putting over the Adjusted Compensation legislation, in the name of the 100,000 overseas veterans who are members of the organization. Mnrphy was the leader of the famous filibuster two years ago that put the bonus bill through the House at that session. This time the majority leader, Mr. Mondell, led the fight for action on the bill sponsored by Chairman Fordney. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, composed entirely of overseas men, has decided upon an active campaign to secure prompt action in the Senate and determine without further delay whether or not the
bill becomes a law. Senator MeCumber, chairman of the Finance Committee, will report out the bill aa soon as possible. Commander Woodside is confident of the passage of the bill in the Senate at the present session, after a series of conferences in Washington with Senate leaders. The headquarters of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is 32 Union Square, New VoTk. The organization has state departments in 37 states, and 1,000 posts throughout the country.
The case was set for trial in the city court and after being postponed several time3 was dismissed for lack of prosecution. The complaining witness did not appear for trial.
HAMMOND THEATERS CHANGE THEIR POLICY Definite Standard is An- . nounced for City's 3 Leading Houses.
For the first time since the S. J. Gregory theatrical interests assumed control of the movie industry in Hammond a definite standard policy. Is announced for all three houses. At the Parthenon, the policy of first run pictures, many 6f them prereleases, will be shown for the first four days of each week, followed on Friday and Saturday by five high high grade vaudeville act, a good picture with comedy, and news reel and on Sunday with a complete change of both vaudeville and pictures. Some arrangements are now under way for a marked change. In 'orchestra directors with many new and novel features In the line of overtures and interesting musical presentations. Detailed announcement will be initio later on this latter according to S. J. Gregory. The Orpheum theater, starting on
Sunday, will Include In Its policy of high clasa feature pictures, three acta of the best vaudeville that can be booked from the large vaudeville hotises in Chicago, with a change in program three time a week. Asa Dunlap, manager of the Orpheum has booked many . plctura attractions which should match up well with the eceptlonally entertaining vaudeville booking' already arranged tor. This leaves the De Luxe theater the only theater in tow n running exclusively first runt picture attractions. Under the management of Charles MJchelstetter this house has continued to prosper and will undoubtedly draw larger crowds with the better class of pictures announced for coming attractions. Trobably one of the biggest hits scored in the new policy for the Do luxe was the booking of Harold Lloyd in "Sailor Made Men," the only picture that drew a two weeks contract from Barabee's loop theater at the phenominal rental price of $11,000. This sum is said to be the largest ever paid for any feature picture In the ci'.y of Chicago. The De Luxe will run this and- other sat about the same time the largest houses) in the
country obtain them for first run showings. Trices at all three houses M ill remain the same for the present time, due entirely to the exhorbltant rental prices now charged lor the high class of Dims now being shown In Hammond. Another new feature of the three houses Is the Inauguration of a very attractive, non-advertising program which will be distributed at the theaters Sunday. A mailing list Is being prepared and picture patrons Interested In the current and coming attractions are urged to leave their name and address at the box office of the, theater.

According to news dispatches from Rockford, a baby girl waa born at the Hurd residence, February 26, and biood poisoning set In. Since, Mra. Lawrenci has contracted pneumonia and lata yesterday the condition of both the mother and daughter was reported serious. Mrs. Lawrence Is a niece of Mrs. George Fisher of this city.
