SOCIAL LIFE OFlt
WHITE HOUSE i
IS TREBLED
Festive Events, Harding Administration, Keep First Lady Busy. BT FRANK A. STETSON" JSTAFF CORRESPONDENT I. N. SERVICL") WASHINGTON. April One of the busiest departments of the White House staff duirns the past ' two months ha been that of the Social Department! under the direction of Miss Laura Harlan, secretary to Mrs. Harding:. When the Hardins entered the
White House they decided to go j throug-h the entire formal social! programme, which had been susTended during the Wilson Adminis- i tratlon on account of the wir and ! other reasons. The social calendar ' at the White House calls for four i large formal rceptlons. in addition to the public reception on New j
ear s Day, and four formal din
ners, in addition to the more infornial "at homes" of Mrs. Harding : and the dinners by the Cabinet! officers. ! There is a gTeat demand 'for invi- ; tatlons to these formal receptions, j and Mrs. Harding has been forced, to announce about ten days in ad-! vance of each one that the invitation lists ha.ve been closed. While there is a special Invitation .list for each reception it has always been , customary to enlarge this list, and ' as news of the practice becomes ( known the requests become more numerous. ; TRIPLES DEPARTMENT Miss Harlan found It necessary to more than triple the social department force and remove it from the Kxecntive Offices to the basement of the White ' House proper, where it functions night and day during th' season. Each request is acted upon per-
s.nally by Mrs. Harding-, but not before all information reeardtne- the reasons for issuing the invitation advanced by the applicant have been investigated. This information is diplomatically obtained by Miss Harlan's aides, and should the applicant be regarded favorably an invitation is dispatched by White House messenger. If unfavorable Miss Harlan writes a very nice note Tnr.sinit Mrs. Haying's regTets In being unable to enlarge the list to include the applicant The White House invitations are engraved, but the name of the recipient is handwritten in the most '"auif ul script. "Only in the sense that prohibition lessens crime. The crime wave isn't confined to this country alone. It's world-wide. It's an afer-the-war condition." It will take time to get the world back to an ethical basis." Bryan admitted he realized that there is considerable bootlegging. Referring to the importation of liquor Into Florida toy boats from the Bermuda Islands, the former Secretary of State said. This matter should be taken up at once with the 'British government. He said congress sliou'd pass a law withdrawing citizenship from any American citizen who goes into another country and uses another country's flag "while he conspires against the laws of his own country." Do you think. Mr. Bryan.' he was asked, "that there Is any chance of light wine and beer?" AMIST HlilvR AD LIGHT WINE "No," he replied. "The wets do not want that. A saloon selling Just wine and beer would not 'be as popular as the old-fashioned saloon that sold everything and had a disorderly house and gambling hall Ui connection with it. "If beer and wine saloons were permitted the ojvners wouldn't obey the law any more than the bootleggers do now." Asked to comment on Go-v. James M. Cox's recent speech be.fore New York democrats. Bryan said he did not care to discuss the speech of any individual, "especially when he deals in generalities." The 1924 campaign issue, a little too eaiMy to predict, Bryan sa.id. Just now the revenue bill seems to absorb attention. The democrats in congress. Bryan said, have male a splendid record on this issue while the republicans have been more divided on it than any other more so, he believed, than the representatives of either party ever were divided on a revenue bill. "And now. Mr. Bryan, what r. vour political plans?"
