FOUNDING
New Music for Spring and Easter
DEVOTIONAL NUMBERS BY ELMAN AND JOURNET ZlnibaUst Plays Mendelssohn's , Spring Song FRING and the Eastertide meet appropriately in several interesting n u m be r s among the Victor Records for April. The joy of the new season . of renewed earthly life and the solemn significance of the Easter are beautifully and profoundly interpreted by lead ers in the world of song. Like an echo throueh the centuries t Elman's remarkable new record, Eili," a violin arrangement of one of the most extraordinary of Jewish melodies an expression of that same despairing cry that Christ himself set up in his dying moments rn the Cross. It is a sad, even terrible strain, in which melancholy and Cespir prevail. France has produced much of the! world's greatest devotional music with which to celebrate the great Christian anniversaries, and the "Hosanna" that Journet sings :r one cf the April Victor Records is among the most subHn-.e of French Easter fionss. It is fluently melodious, telling the story superbly in wonderful, resonant French. Particularly timely was the recent by Caruso during life. The CruciUxus (t from Rossini's Solcnn Macs was iK chosen by the Victor Talking Machine Company as perhaps the most appropriate to break the silence, on ifVj part, which has followed Caruso's e death. Whatever tne rekpious faith of its hearers, whatever the quality cr degree of their belief, this record, vlth its ancient stcry of death for redemption, brings us face to face 'ilci tbe eld questions of life, death a;:d immortality, the eld ideals of love and sacrifice. Musically the Trcrrd is worthy in every detail of the (jreat man who made it. Trinity Quartet sings four splendid Easter hymns, each occupying its own side of two double-fcced Victor Records. "The Strife Is O'er, The Battle Done," is one of the most plorious hymns of any faith or people, the words being from an old Latin hymn, the melody from Giovanni da Palestrina, the great sixteenth century Italian composer. "Our Lord Is Risen from the Dead" was written by Charles Wesley, brother of John, and pne of 'the greatest English hymnodists. Tbe tune is that grand old song "Duke Street." Ia each cf thesa fcyir.ni one stanza is taken by .the soprano voice, solo. The two other numbers, cn a single record, are "God So Loved, tl'e World" from Sir John Staincr's "7 he Crucifixion," an oratorio known to tboajands and sang in many Christian Churches on Good Friday or at Easter. On the reverse ia "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today," Charies Wesley's wordsetting a cna cf Mozart's most inspired melodies, with all the jubilatira of Easter ia its glorious phrases. Splendid Love Song Happy the son? that can Kara Schumaoa-Heink to interpret and perpetuate its beauty. "If 1 Torget" which she sings on a Victor Record for April is slow in tempo, set among generous harmonica, but nothing iu description can hope to set forth the randeur of the voice itself. In the eecond stanza a solo violin takes up a high, sweet, vibrant conatcr-melody, remaining with the voice to the end. The overture to Don PasquaU (one rf the few overtures Donizetti left from hs many operas) ia quick and as sprightly as the opera itseif and that's a good dcaL Toscanisi and La Seal a Orchestra play this melodious number on two records for April Victor audiences, each separately interesting, though both necessary to fomplete the overture. It is pure, ight, spontaneous melody, requiring po further explanation Tbe old, old play of dissecting a rlaity for love's answer is the subject cf Werrenrath's selection for a delightful Victor Record in April. -Tell Me. Daisy" is informal in style, some of its best effects being achieved by the simplest means. It is suns; without affectation, which is one of the most difficult attainments of any singer, great or small. Vvhatever may be meant by "popular" music, Mendelssohn's "Song Without Word s," cr Spring Song, is all that and a classic of iclafities. So on the Victor Record list for April we find it interpreted balist, as trua -., an artist a9 Ut. . crtr set bow.' f t -S TO VJO I LIJ, LiC , " plays it simply v and without t!w .r . display, against I ,Z,mbhsC an orchestral fas wwsaSr'j'l accompaniment in which the harp- takes chief place, Braslaa Sings a Cradle Song A beautiful Russian cradle song set to English words, this is both musically and for pure sentiment a record cf exquisite rarity. The first soft string chords lit here and there with a celesta-tone, establish the rhythm cn which the voice almost immediately begins to rock to and fro. Later it swings upon the lustrous broken chords of a harp. For all its tenderness, the song has that note of sadness from which Russian music never has seemed quite free, yet it's a song which will bring comfort and the sense of peace. The Flonxaley Quartet's new Victor Record for April is a Nocturne by Borodin, quaint, yet bold, having for f -hief theme a fragment of Oriental 1 melody, jakso f roa Mcbamjaedaa
students resident In Lake county. Indiana University was founded January 20th, 1820. The doors were open to the first students at nine thirty a. m., 1824, when ten students enrolled to take up the study of Greek and Latin. These subjects were the only ones taught at the college at that time. The history of the University by Judge Banta, one of the earliest students and later Dean of the School of Law, Is delightfully Interesting In Its descriptions of the struggles in those early school days. All the students then came from Indiana homes but now many states and foreign countries are represented. Access to the University then was on foot, the student carrying his baggage tied up in a handkerchief, or on horseback with saddle bags." This Is Jn marked contrast to the easy travel of present day students. The salary of the first professor was $250 a year.
legend, pie number opens with th!a theme, sung by a 'cello against a svneopated chord accompaniment There follows a cheerful Russian dance-rhythm, returning again to the main motif which is worked into some intricate and fascinating designs. Mme. Galli-Curci has sung for Victor audiences some simple and some decorative numbers. For an April Victor Record she sings "Ah I vous dirais-je. maman ?" (Should I Tell You Mother?) -Variations on a Mozart Air a number based on a quaint little air. unaffected and simple as a child's song, which she develops into a coloratura number of startling brilliancy and dash. At the cir.iax the voice leaps away from its following flute, to the "high E." which it holds with perfect ease and power. "Someone Worth While," which Edward Johnson sings for a Victor Record in April, is a song of retrospection, cf gentle yet not too profound regret of the "golden days," the things that life has known and lost. The melody and rhythm of the song are in admirable keeping with the spirit cf the words, sung with fine interpretative sense, the artist taking up and passing on each phrase as though lifting, for a moment, some time-consecrated object, then setting it down with a cigh. The sun and moon of the East are in a new number by Hans Kindler among the. April Victor Records. Arabian only in name, yet "Arabian Melody" (Melodie Arabe) is entirely Oriental, exotic and fantastic in feeling. It's a daring bit of orchestral composition, too, for deep-stringed in? struments openly accompany the soloist, without losing contrast. If you have been curious to hear a cello harmonic? this record has one. "You will not soon forget it. That situation in Verdi's "Err.ani" where Don Carlos, King of Spain, threatensdeath to the aged Don Silva is one of the most dramatic in opera. Ruffo eingi it for an April Victor Record "Lo Vedremo, O Veglio Auciace" (I Will Prove Audacious i 1 - .7 V- . - ... . - ? 3f fine of th - S, S. 1 i?V .nM,, m.tnh"- .w'.lMyi dian opera ; not Ruffo fa itself but fine a niece of Italian lyric singing, perhaps, as Ruffo has ever set into permanent form. Five New Victor Dance Records Five of the country's representative dance orchestras make their own separate records for Victor in April,' including one waltr. All Star Trio E.nd Their Orchestra ploy "Hortense" which certainly miht have been composed "when father was a boy" considering its inclusion of "When the Corn is Waving, Annie, Dear," "Turkey in the Straw," "Wiit for the Wagon," and others of the same vintagc. Never Mind," on the reverse side is slower than "New York" fox trot time, and includes a phrase from Saint-Saens' "Samson and Delilah." Club Royal Orchestra does some startling things with "Wanna," which starts with a bang, goes over to a deep sax like a arum, steps into a fcigner sax theme, rags a bit of Grieg melody, to mention a few of its general effects. "Sac Loves Me, She Loves Me Not" is a strongly accented dance, with some dove-like, fluttering sax-melodies. To help you try out the Scandal Walk, the Whitemans make a remarkable record on the April Victor list. "Cutie" is a brilliant medley fox trot, with soft, blazing woodwind chord "Lonesome Hours" on the reverse is rather a stately dance, interrupted by gossipy little conferences among separate group of instruments. There are as many ways to waltr ss to make a Welsh rarebit. Joseph C. Smith and His Orchestra include on a new Victor Record for April a fine waltz 'number to practice with. "Three O'Clock in the Morning" is dow, steady, smooth as water in a canal. "Lola Lo" on the other side of this record is a Hawaiian fox trot, with a strain of Viennese in which the strings predominate, giving a peculiarly flexible qmlity. Two fine fox trots by the Ben-son Orchestra of Q"ica?o complete the Victor dar.ee offerings for April. "Virginia Blues" is slow, with here and there a phrase from "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny." "Venetian Foat Song" is in decidedly quicker time, with plenty of orchestral color and a bit of the barcarolle from "The Tales of Hoffmann." Merle Alccck Sins Two Favorite Everybody thinks they know "Roclc-a-Bye Baby," but don't think you know it till you hear Merle Alcock sing it on a new Victor Record, all her own, in April. It is sung in a pure and lovely voice, with a soft, wistful obbligato for the violin joining in the second stanza, "My Trundle Bed" which she sings on the reverse, is another old unforgettable, redolent of balsam-apple, lavender and clean sheets. Fanny Brice is once more with us on her own Victor Record for ApriL While she sings "I'm an Indian ta a patter cf clever stuff in the orchestra, she's forced finally to confess that shea really a "Yiddisher squaw." Then, on the other side, she's no aquaw at all, but a Yiddisher sninter, on account of a low-lifer named Nathan. "Oh, How I Hate That Fellow Nathan" conveys the moral ia vigorous Brooklyn Yiddisher that a man in the srms is worth three oa the road. An unusual record among the new Victor offerings for April is the "Song of Love," from "Blossom Time," the first record to be sung in duet by Lucy Iiabelle Marsh and Royal Dadmun. It is a combination of popular melody and fragments from the unfinished Symphony of Fran Schubert. Oa the reverse we hare Schubert again, Lambert Murphy with Orpheus Quartet singing his immortal "Serenade." Each month's Victor announcements bring fresh and ever interesting new combinations of immortal sore newly interpreted by the world's leading artists. These records are now at your nearest Victor dealer. wneref you can near them at you pleasure.
The growth of the University from its earliest beginnings has teen steady; but for the last ten years the Increase has been wonderful. The University is now doing big things. The blgrgest, perhaps, of its present undertakings is the raising of a million dollar memorial fund, of which 5400,000 was recently raised in 30 hours in a gigantic drive on the campus. This fund Is to supply many urgent needs of the University. I'art of it is to be spent in the erection of the first units of a dormitory system for women and alao the initial units of an athletic stadium. The drive with the alumni will begin next September.
"FAT" ARBUCKLE FREED OF CHARGE By ELLIS IL MARTIN STAFF CORRESPONDENT 1. N.'SERVICE SAN KKANC1SCO. April lis. "I hold no animosity against any man. I want to got back to work In my life profession. I hope to come back. Pictures are fear to me. They are my life work. 1 have no plans just now. I could not make any until this cloud was lifted. I will consult with my friends within the next few days." Such was the future outlook of Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, famous film comedian, who on his third trial for manslaughter was fretd of the charge by a jury of eight men and four women after but a minute's deliberation, as outlined by himself today. "I am an American. I accept the verdict of an American jury." This was th statement of District Attorney Matthew Brady.
