Because of the open and notorious manner in which, the. liquor smucelinp is tarried on at this point, which is in the county adjoining; Puval County, of which Jacksonville is the county seat, it has cam to be popularly known a "Little Eimini" after Himini. one of the liquor clearing ports of the Bahama Island. Practically all of the contraband whiskey landed at this point is run into Jacksonville by ninht in automobiles by local bootleggers, who. according' to officers, store it in their houses and other places and retail it locally to hotel patrons and private homes and to individuals. According to officials there are ihree of the most prominent boot-, leceers controlling the major portion of the illicit supply. a case of the finest liquors, at the rate of approximately So.fiO a quart in. case lots, or from $45 to $63 a case, each case containing a dozen quart-;. Seizure of this liquor is practically impossible in most instances t is stated, because of the drastic Florida laws agrainst un-
; iawful searches, making it impos
sible for an officer to search for liquor unless he has actual knowledge of its possession by the suspected person. Federal officials, however, declare that, while Jacksonville and its surrounding territory is wet. the large portion of the liquor supply obtainable is of the moonshine variety distilled in Duval County and that reports of rum running from the coast are greatly exaggerated. They admit, however, while clairrfing that most of the local supply is moonshine, that thousands of cases of "the real stuff." smuggled into Florida from the British West Indies, pa-s through Jacksonville on the way West via the railroads. According to ' the officials, huge shipments of the prohibited liquor are .made in freight cars, billed mostly to points in the Middle West and Far West and camouflaged as fruits, fish, vegetables and other lawful commodities. Recently two freight cars. loaded with smuggled liquor at a small town in the south of Tlorlda, near xheie the stuff was lan-ded by the smugglers, and billed to Kansas
City as tomatoes, were seized in
the yards here while being transferred from one railroad to another. The two cars seized each contained approximately 50 cases of choice European liquors. Capture of this caigo, however, was due to a tip given the officials, which does not often happen. Another source of prolific transportation of illicit whiskey, they
state, is via the trunk route. Irge

nre carried North and West by individuals or jootlegyers' agents in trunks taken with them as personal baggage. Numbers of these trunks have been seized when tough handling at the railroad sta
tion caused some of the precious
wares to break and leak out. It is said that there are certain wealthy clubs in Middle Western cities agents make regular trips to Florida, returning with trunks filled w'th the smuggled whiskey.
