MAJOR LEAGUE I m

STATOS ALTERS IN FORTNIGHT By DAVIS J. WAIH i International News Service Sports Editor) NEW YORK, April 10. Two weeks is quite an interval if you happen to tpend it in jail or in a dentist's chair. Almost anything can happen in that time ' from a decision in a chess match to the payment of the tailor's bill. It is, thereforfc. nobody's particular business that the status of some "f the major league ball clubs has altered during recent weeks; the fait is mentioned for the take of giving credit where credit is due. We do not refer to the potential pennant contenders. On the contrary, our observation concerns a pair of clubs we picked for the second division, to wit. the Brooklyn Dodgers in the National League and the Chicago White S x in the American. P.oth have uncovered unsuspected depths since venturing into the South; the Dodgers it- 8 out of la games with the Yanks, the Kox in holding the world's champions to a six-all standoff. Uncle Robbie has succumbed to custom and habit in once again bringing his pitching staff out of the South In grand condition and figures .to win many a ball game in the firt six weeks of the race', A young r.orsnn nampd Andy High., brother of all the otucr Highs from Hughey on down the line, has rounded out the I.rooklyn infield from a defensive standpoint. Aid to date everything has been as sweet as a demure glance. The Dodgers may yet break into the first division. Of the White Sox. that much cary nor be expected. They are just coming up for a'r after the upheaval of 1919. but they are good enough to go r long way if they get any ktnd of pitching. Far from finishing last, as some of the boys would have it. they may i step right along at The head of the I second division, where they can nib ble at the leaders from time to time. At times this spring the, Sox have looked like a cool million behind Faher. proving what good pitching will do for a ball club When Dick Kerr returns, as heventually will do. nnd if Wilkinson. Hodge. Robertson or any one of the young pitchers come through, the White Sox will be no nven's sap. The left side of the infield might be better, but otherwise the club is fool proof. WILLS-CLOSE Jl BY DAVIS J. WALSH International News Serv ics Sport Editor. NEW YORK. April 10. The statement made to the writer by Jack. Dempsey that Harry Willis was not expected to follow him abroad when he sails on the Ac quitania on Tuesday means one of two things: Either Dempsey and Wills are convinced that there Is not enough money in Europe to make it worth their highly remunerative time or they have a definite assurance from parties unknown that the bout can and will be held in this country by Eabor Day. The fact that Dempsey can speak for a promimnent challenger mayappear singular on the face of it. yet it means nothing. The two rival camps are. something of a close corporation right now and quite understand each other,' but they have no "understanding" in the subtile sense of the word. They merely realize that it is good business to know each other's intentions. The Dempsey-Wills proposition is mysterious right now. No one outside the close corporation, seems to know why the Dempsey troupe is going to England without definite assurances of a match there. Dempsey told us yesterday that "they were Just taking a chance." Knowing the astute Kearns. that doesn't seem to add up right He will take a chance right enojgh but not before he sees some money ' on the table. In view of this, it can I be assumed that they know some- j thing but deem it advisable to keep it to themselves. j Eong ago. when Harry Frazee I thrust his fingers into his watch j pocket and came tip for air with his absurd offer, Kearns Informed some of his frineds that he really didn't care to talk about the mat -;h at that early date.
