Ql'ALITY YOU CAX XOT BUY Ths chief aim in the home garden should be to grow those vegetables in which freshness is the most important factor. FCTTIXG SM.ILL SPACE IX rSE How big shall the garden be? It i3 a useless waste of space and energy to plant a garden larger than the family needs require unless there is a market for surplus vegetables. Ordinarily one-fourth to one-half an acre will provide the average family with a generous quantity of vegetables. If close attention is paid double and succession cropping, one quarter of an acre will be ample for a family of six. This space would need careful cultivation. The plants necessarily would be as close together as cultivation permits In order to secure the largest yield from the space. A garden closely planted and with a constant sucesslon of crops provided for, needs to ibe more heavily fertilized than one where there Is

more room.

Xo space is too small to grow something for the table. A space

as small as five feet square- will furnish tomatoes, lettucs and radishes.
