When is a Mototist Not a Motorist?
According to some authorities a motorist is not a motorist: When he deliberately disregards traffic rules. When he enters a boulevard without slowing down or stopping. When he does not hug the middle of the street in turning left. When he uses spotlight instead of headlights. When he refuses to dim lights on dark thoroughfares. Until more stringent rules are brought into use and motoring will be accompanied with more or less danger. It is said there is scarcely a motorist that does not violate some one or more of the traffic rules every day. A well known Hammond man made this statement: "I bet I can follow you and have you pinched in less than an hour for violating traffic laws. You can follow me and I'll get pinched in ten minutes." This man is a model citizen and a prominent man, yet he admits a certain laxity in observing existing
rules. Others many of them are doing the same thing. and they are not the expert drivers this man above is reputed to be. Therein lies the danger. A good driver can in most cases violate the rules and get away with it, but the inexperienced cannot, and they not only jeopardize themselves but others as well. There is only one remedy for this condition, and that is law enforcement. It will be hard on the careless.' but easy on the careful. Disregard the rules in a large metropolitan city and there's onhr one tiling to do go to the court and pay the fine. Usually the dose is pretty stiff, too. Have you a suggestion as to driving? If you think it worthy of publication address it to Automobile Editor. It may help to eliminate some of the dansjer in motoring.
Arthur Snodgrass in Third Speed
Arthur Sndograss used to live In 2Iun.de. Art bad a dream one night. In th.lt dream, he pictured himself In Hammond, Indiana. It was shortly alter this dream that he pulled stakes and left Muncie, as much as h loved the old berg-. As a kniffht of the Brush nobody ever slung" mud any more cleverly than he. So when he landed in Hammond In; the spring of '17 he juried up, an automobile paint shop at -180 Hohman street. Ke did good work, and this combined with a good personality, furnished him the neucleus for a paint hutinees that forced blm to see larger Quarters three times. The last riove he expected to be the last, so accordingly secured one or the largest buildings In the city his present quarters, where he occupies two large floors. The Auto Customs Shop has been
of real service to automobile owners In this region. It is on a par with the best and is a credit to Snodgrass, as big as he Is. (Weighed 200 last). But you who hve not seen the Auto Customs Shop Interior arrangement lately will receive a. surprise next time you enter his portals. (Sounds like heaven). Tou will now see displayed in the spacious front room OakJAnds, Maxwells and Chalmers motor cars. All Art has to do now Is chew tobacco and watch his six salesmen take orders for cars, 'tis said. Big men are hard to get at, but after working a very , clever ruse, the writer was brought Into the presence of Mr. Snodfass. Asked what he had to say for himself, the most important of his remarks were the following words: Building y business on service."

O'NEIL TALKS WITH HEAD OF PAGE CO
Jtrry O'Neil, Paige dealer in Hammond, gives the following, part of an interview with Harry M. Jewett. president of the Talge-De-troit Motor Car Company: 5 'Motor car dealers throughout the country are confronted with a greatly increased market becauee of the postponement of buying during the past eighteen months. "Tens of thousands of cars In operation are worn out. Mr. Jewett declared. They will no longer operate efficiently. The time has come when they must fee replaced, when It will really cost less in many cases to Juk them and buy a new car than to continue their operation. And than Mr. Jewett. referring to the motor car as a recognised necessity, asked th-U pertinent question: 'Have you heard of anyone who has sold his automobile and bought a horse and buggy?" "American business is Just ready and waiting to be pushed over the top into an era of gooi times," Mr.
Jewett told his dealers. "I am not predicting boom times immediately -it may be sometime before we see them. But business men and salesmen in partl-ular have it in their power to bring 'back good times. "Fundamental conditions have Improved with astonish ng rapidity in recent months. The situation is now such that the right product at the right prices, backed by vigorous selling, will give us good business. With the Improvement In exchange , export trado is In a much more wholesome condition. This means an added stimulus to till lines of American business. "New England has passed well through the period of reconstruction. Now with the West improving rapidly, with conditions in the South already improved, with export trade on the mend, there Is a growing buying power, but there Is also a greater willingness to buy. The buyers' strike Is a thing of the past." Mr. C'Nell is very enthusiastic over the prospects for this year. "The condition Of the automobile market has a great deal to do with the prosperity of the country. As tsr as the local situation is concerned the prospects were never better, and we look for the best period In the history of our business during 1922." The O'Neil Auto Sales Is considered as a top notcher In sales by the makers of Paige oars.
