Merrlman of Cleveland avenue are entertaining the former's brother Milton Merrlman who has just returned from the Orient where he has spent the past elevens-ears in China, Japan and the Phillipines as adirector of tourists for a large steamship company. Mr. Merrlman brought back many treasures of the Orient with him. The choir of the Church of Christ will give a musical program in the church next Sunday evening. The Women's Foreign Missionary are entertaining the Standard Bearera in the M. K. Church at 6:30 this evening at a Mothers and Daughters banquet. The Whiting Maccabees will hold an open house to the citizens of Whiting on Monday evening, April 3rd at eight p. m. sharp to which the public is invited. Mr. R. N. Smith of Laporte, Ind.. will be the speaker to open the evening's enjoyment, after which Mr. Muller, traveler and lectured, will give an Illustrated lecture on "Two National Parks In two Weeks." There will also be good musical numbers and dancing, following the above program and promises to ibe one of the big events of Waiting's social

activities. The funeral services of the late Joseph Mattis of 414 Fred street, who was killed by a switching train of the Standard Oil Co., on the company's track at Front street and Standard avenue. Tuesday at 10:15 p. m., when Tie hurried to avoid being hit by a passenger train will be held at St. John's church tomorrow morning at 9:00 o'clock and interment will be made In St. John's cemetery in Hammond. The funeral services of Mary B. Miller, mother of the late Rev. Wm. C. Miller, were held in the Sacred Heart church on Tuesday morning. The remains were shipped to Cin cinnati, Ohio, for burial. There are left to mourn her loss three sons, Edward Miller of Cincinnati; August Miller of Orange. N. J.; and Theodore Miller of St. Paul. Minn., and two daughters, Mrs. Francis O'Connell. Tacoma, Wash., and Dora Foster, Livingston.
