Does Your Street Need a Tonic?
Many of Hammond's streets are obsolescent. They are no longer fit to meet the conditions as demanded by modern traffic. Who's fault is it? There 'is a general reluctance to foot the bill for a new surface. It means additional tax. Who get's the benefit. Not me, is the attitude of many property owners. Instead of looking at it as a burden every taxpayer should consider it a privilege to have a part in the creation of a thoroughfare that facilitates progress that brings convenience. A run down street is a disgrace to any section of a city. And until that time comes when the taxpayer will see the advisability of lending co-operation in the resurfacing the various streets that are now in a deplorable condition, Hammond will continue to suffer. Community thought will take on a new color when the vision of progress grips the public to such an extent that improvements
will be considered an asset rather than a liability. Keeping a street in repair is not an expense. It is an investment. It makes a city more important. It builds community spirit. Hammond would be a prouder city by far if the town could point its finger to modern streets throughout. The issue will have to be met sometime. It is a duty that every citizen owes the community, for a community is important only in proportion to the activity of its citizens. Every public improvement adds value to property. The installment plan enables everyone to pay for the improvement without entailing a hardship. If your street needs a tonic. Who'll be the first to make a noise about it? If it needs a new surface who'll be the first to sign the petition? Let someone on your street be a leader start the ball a-rolling. Let's make Hammond a city of better streets let's do it NOW.
P. J. Bauwens Makes a Few Strides
Among Hammond men who have made a success in the automotive world here, is P. J. Bauwens. Six years ago Bauwens started out with a second hand car. He was determined on one thing selling Studebakers. Bauwens rented a small place in the rear of 85 Hohman street and started out with a used demonstrator. But he made a profound impression with this demonstrator so profound he attributes his real start -in the automobile business to this car. It was only a short time after he had established himself in the little coop of a place at the above address -when he located a buyer for a new Studebaker. This man was and is a successful physician. Well, Bauwens sold him so completely for the Studebaker the doctor has since dickered with Bauwens .for four other Studebaker models. Naturally there is a warm feeling In the region of Bauwens" aorta (whatever that is) for this w. k." doctor. But he has just as successfully sold others for the Studebaker, among them other Hammond doctors and professional men. Bauwens has always been strong tor. veracily---haven't heard whether he likes moonshine or not, but he
does respect veracity, and this fact has had much to do with his successful career. The physician's purchase was a big ad for P. J. His sales record mounted up from that time on. Sometimes later he opened up in what is now a meat store on South Hohman. As commodious as this place was, he soon outgrew it and the latter part of last year moved into a beautiful salesroom at 756 South Hohman street, which is considered a very tastily arranged place. Studebaker sales have become so enormous the makers recently adopted the slogan "This is a Studebaker year." Bauwens. too, says so, and points with considerable pride to a long list of recent purchasers. The latest buyer of a Studebaker is C. W. Forsberg, 3828 Parish avenue, Indiana Harbor. Mr. Bauwens says the greater part of his business comes from repeat orders. "I account for it in this way," he goes on to say: "I have always taken the trouble to make known to my client the value he is getting --pointing out that value in the minutest detail." So you have the story of the success of one of Hammond's leading dealers. "Watch for the next story on conspicuous successes.
Safe Rules To Follow In Buying An Automobile
Make yoursef acquainted with the personality selling you the car. To know that personality and to even know the product he sells better than you know him is a safe course to pursue In buying a car. Learn of his reputation for standing back of the productAscertain the sort of service you will secure along with the car you buy.
Remember what he tells you when closing the deal. Any car that has stood the test of time; that NOW has a bright future before it is a afe car to buy. Avoid haste in buying. Get the facts. Then deliberate. When you have done all these you can't help being proud of your purchase.
