The restless urge that sends the little feathered creatures trailing valiantly from south on the very heels of the Storm King is the same as that which spure the hobo, the comopolites of the road, to new pastures. This Is the observation of Mrs Margaret P. Turner, secretary of the Hammond Bed Cross. Her office in the Superior Court building is besieged daily by men seeking lodging and food. "In the winter we helped a great many. But these usually were men who lived in this district. Many of these have gone apparently, or have found jobs. Xow their places are being taken by transients. Men drift in, want a bed and something to eat, and then move on. Most of these are ex-service men. Probably it is the spring that Increases the number of transients." Mrs. Turner had se-ven applicants for aid one afternoon recently. Hammond, center of a net-work of railroads, usually is the jumping off place for Itinerant train riders bound for Chicago. Money to care for the derelicts is derived from the E-ed Cross fund, established by Tied Cross membership drives. "I'd rather hang than spend five years in the penitentiary," shouted Genus Coffield, and leaned over the table and plunged a dagger into the breast of his nephew. The court room was thrown Into an uproar, Sheriff Kerlln felled the elder Coffield with a blow on the head and the young man was carried Into another room, where first id treatment was given him. Genus Coffield was returned to Jail and plac ed under heavy guard. The nephew died today. HOTTEST OVEN INHAMMOND Hottest oven In Hammond! E. F. Van Home and C. It. Bowman will have it.
