SPEAKS ON CAUSE OF ZIONISM (Continued from paj;e one.)

a nation," said Professor Sokolow, "and thero are three nations who should control the Near fc,ast; the Armenians. Arabs and the Jews. Armenia has suffered. She has suffered a great deal, but her suffering could never be compared with the suffering of the Jews. We are in very close contact with the Armenians, and I am glad to be able to state that the Armenians speak with deep gratitude concerning the Americans; for their Missionaries who have to go to Armenia and

make sacrifices. They have established schools, and in danger of their own lives, have aided the poor and suffering. These American missionaries have saved many Armenians." "The Pence Conference," the Prolessor stated, "has decided that Armenia must bo restored. What happened to the Jaws and Armenians was not war. It was after the Armistice was proclaimed that many of these massacres took place. A recognized nation can never be massacred. It can be attacked, and can suffer very much by the attack, but such a nation can defend Itself. Massacres can be accomplished only uprsn unrecognized nations. The peace conference has decided to restore Armenia, give back Turkish Armenia to her and recognize her as a nation." "I have heard many people who, I cus'iite to sa', were not acquainted with the subject, that Palestine nfi'..5 fi'ver 'ie restored. This is a great mistake. Greece was restored over a hundred years ago, and the Jewish country can be restored. "We shall have some trouble with the Arabs, but we do not worry about this. That matter will take time, but finally it will b adjusted. I am a Zionist for the Arabs as well as for the Jews," Professor Sokolow stated. "We have been a productive and prosperous country," the professor continued, "and we have existed there longer than any nation has existed in any other part of the world. We have existed there for fourteen centuries, and the country Is the land of Israel. If you take it from a Jewish view point, it is the Promised Land. The Jewish people are always singing, praying and wait Ing for this home. Palestine Is not yet prepared, and I am afraid it will take some time before the people who want to go there can go and make Palestine their home." "I remember when the Movement of Protests was established in 1810," said Prof. Sokolow. "1 was a young Journalist at the time, and from time to time we had to approach the British, Italian and other governments about our grave problems. What was to become of the Eastern Kuropean Jews? The question has become worse and worse. The only hope left for the Jews is to give them a country. They must have a country they can call theirs. Nothing can keep back these starving people. They must go somewhere, but where are we going to send them? . "When I went to the League of .Nations," the speaker continued, "I had 300.000 name of people who had lost their lives through starvation and suffering of all sorts. When I pokef they told me, 'Tea, but you are not in the League of Nations.' I could not be admitted to the League of Xatlons. We shall be protected only when the Jewish people have their representative in the League of Nations, or any other inter- " national conference. "Then," the speaker said, "we will have no more massacres. We wilt be prepared to defend ourselves if we are, artackd. but we cannot exist like so many unprotected orphans." The speaker pointed out the coming of a holiday, the Jewish Passever. He explained that hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent on these occasions, and "enough money to buy hundreds of Palestines. "Palestine is the Holy Land," Prof. Sokolow concluded, "the Promised Land, and the home of the Jewish people. Let us work together for the restoration of that country which is going to mean happiness for so many."

The audien.ee arosa lu respect to Professor Sokolow as hts nnpressle talk came to a climax greeting him with a, thunderous applause. Professor Hoffman, well known Chicago Jewish exponent of the Palestine cause was next introduced and made a touching appeal for assistance in the world-wide Jewish cause. His picturing Sokolow as the mentor of the wonderful work which has already been done, engraving his name into the molds of history, when their children's children and future generations will look back to this man as thd saviour of their persecuted race. Plans had been riade earlier in the week for the speaking to be held at the Gary Commercial Clul) rooms but at the elevtnth hour yesterday, seats were in such demand that the committee realized that only half of the people who wished to hear Mr. Sokolow would be able to attend the program. The Gary Theatra was then secured. After a tour through Lake county where he visited the cities of Hammond, Whit.lng. Kast Chicago and Indiana Harbor Mr. Sokolow arrived In Gary. A large number of Chicago people accompanied the distinguished guest to Gary. He was loud in his praise for if a Calumet region and although having lived in bath London and Paris was struck with its magnitude and wonderful Industrial activities. "I will never forget the 23rd day of March 1922," he said last night Just before returning to Chicago Before the meeting came to a close, some J10.00G jn cash donations was taken in for the Keren Hayesod (Palestine Foundation Fund) and it is expected that wit other pledges and donations received In the near future that the subscription will hit thj $23,000 mark.
