had finished it his enemy was out of the war. Afterwards he was sent to Egypt and out of a clear sky, just as his famous victory, came the announcement of Britain's offer of freedom to Egypt. Allenby is a man who thinks everything out and then acts, with the appearance but not the fact of haste. It is merely that the world is hardly prepared for he sudden announcement of what he has striven quietly for a long time to accomplish. Of all the war heroes he is as likely as any other to live in story and history. In peace as in war he has proved himself. It is the exception, rather than the rule, that the great soldier is also the great administrator.
HOOVER STAYS IN CABINET. Herbert Hoover is to be congratulated upon is decision to remain at his post 61 public servc rather than accept the offered opportunity r directing a semi-public enterprise which ould confine his activity more or less to a loUty. The administration at Washington is, too. be congratulated upon the fact that Mr. Hoo;r is to remain at his post. But the business .terests of the country, speaking broadly of inlstry and commerce and all the activities hich just now are at the critical time of the reibilitation and reconstruction period, are even ore to be congratulated that the services of a isiness man like Mr. Hoover will be retained 7 the people. Mr. Hoover never was a politician; he has ways been a man of executive ability, of a fine id practical vision which is possible to a man : the right sort of workable imagination. He doing things just now in a quiet unspectacular ay, more lastingly important than the more:ardJE things he accomplished in the warjars. LEAGUE DOES NOTHING. "Freedom of the seas" was one of the fourteen points advanced by Woodward Wilson to prevent a recurrence of the World War. But vhen he got to Europe he was convinced he should "forget it'" since with the League of Nations in operation there would be no neutrals if war broke out and that particular point would have no significance. Well, the League of Nations has been operating more than two years but it has not prevented wars and now the "freedom of the seas" comes forth again to trouble. Greece and Turkey are contesting for possession of territory. Italy claims that Greece has been seizing her ships and demand is made at Rome that the problem of the Near East be solved in order that commerce of Mediterranean countries be freed from molestation. This solution is business of the League of Nations, but it is keeping hands off because it does not suit Great Britain and France to have a settlement. Protection of members' rights is business of the League of Nations but it is doing nothing to assure Italy's freedom from interference by Greece because France and Great Britain would not permit it to. Italy might be drawn into this war. Were she, others also might have to take a hand in the strife, and all Europe might become involved. As an instrument for the Preservation of peace through the promotion of Justice the League of Nations is a sham.

ALLENBY OF MEGIDDO. Consider Allenby the man who set Jerusan free. His fame comes from his operations a land where conquerors may have been made id unmade. It is old ground, first Palestine id then Egypt His title when he was made a er, was Lord of Megiddo, which is another .me for Armageddon.
