"I had no Idea!" Some eighty members of the Rotary, Club and their wives expressed themselves unanimously in that fashion last nlgrht following an extensive sight-seeing trip through the Hammond exchange of the Illinois Bell Telephone Co. It was a get-acquainted party, the first of a series of three, to be staged by the local officers of the company In cooperation with Chicago officials. The exclamation of interest and wonder that was forced to the lips of the visiting Rotarlans came frequently through the course of the evening as new and amazing intricacies were revealed. Employes of the company spared no pains to unveil the mysteries of the exchange. From the moment Mrs. A., bursting with news and tremulous with excitement gasped the telephone number of Mrs. B. to the operator until Mrs. B. herself picked up the receiver for a delicious half hour, the
succeeding steps in the connectionbody.
was made clear to the visitors.
The educational treat of the evening was enhanced with a meaty and all too (brief minstrel entertainment given by the employes of the operating department. These were Miss Brennon, Interlocutor; and the Misses Gilchrist, Strodo'beck, Hart, Seward, Pool and Pease with Miss Plageman at the piano. In the absence of Oscar A. Krlnbf II. district manager, his able assistant, Harold Carroll stood on the "welcome" mat In the lobby of the building and greeted the arrivals. Mr. and Mrs. J. J.- Carroll, commercial manager of the Gary exchange and formerly of Hammond, were out of town visitors. Some of the interesting people the Rotarlans met on their tour last evening were Miss Katherine Meredith, chief operator and her assistant Miss N'olan: W. G. Davenport, district traffic manager and his assistant. V. A. Swanson; F. E. Stewart, district plant chief, and his assistant M. H. Campbell, and finally that agreeable personality from the Chicago office, who made the visitors feel like old friends, Mr. H. F. Crunden, special agent. KIW.VMS RECEPTIOV TOMCHT The performance of last evening will be repeated again tonight when the Kiwanis Club will be entertained. Wednesday, March 29, will be Public Visiting Day. from seven ,to nine. Mr. H. F, Crunden greeted the Rotarians on behalf of the company and said he was sorry that District Jlanager KrinbiH could not be present as he was sick at home. He said that a little history of the tele
phone might be of interest to the j visitors. "The first telephone in '
the Hammond Telephone Exchange was in District Manager KrinbiU's drug store at the coi ner of Hohman and State streets, away back in 1S93. It was then a toll station. Two years later in 1S97 a switchboard was installed in the rear of the store with 26 subscribers and two years later it was moved to an office over the store. In 1902 it was moved to this building with S00 subscribers and In 1913 the second unit was built to care for the growth. There are now a total of stations in the Hammond 'District of 16.450 In the Hammond Exchange 5,265, and West Hammond 623." These five thousand odd stations added Crunden, can not only communicate with every other telephone in the Hammond exchange but with every other telephone in the entire territory and with more than 13 million other telephones In every city, town, village and hamlet in the forty-eight states "of the Union. T. tE. Stewart, the district plant chief, gave a vivid description of manifold duties of the plant department and explained In detail the division of the department toy districts the plant functions, wire chief duties, assignment duties, repair and storm trouble difficulties and in, a general way outlined the. routine much to the edification of the Rotarlans. Hotarlans heard an Interesting result of research of H. F. Crunden, special agent with the Chicago office who riad been pouring over old records of the Hammond company.
