NEW YORK. March According to the girls (who ell thins in the smart shops of Manhattan there is one "very nicest woman" in this city. It is Mrs. Vincent Astor. "Never does forget to be thoughtful for a tired cclrk," one of them explained. "I've known her to Intend lo leave without buying something she teaily wanted just because it was j,-tting toward closing time and the plrls locked tired. I'd stay an hour extra for her any t!mcbut that's it, she's on-3 who wouldn't want you to."
tag marked with his name and the students thronged around. their favorites, gleaning information, advice, and personal glory. Many of them brought samples of their work with them for expert Judgment and they got It as frankly as -was conajkiunsiurate with a party. A very gent and rather admirable etiquette for the divorced is being built up by the most urbane of those men and women who liave passed through the experience. For Instance. Mrs. William K. Vanderbllt. Snd, established a precedent of considerable poise the other night when she appeared at the ball given by her former husband for their daughter Muriel and took ner place next to him on the receiving line. There were resultant rumors, of course, of a reconciliation; bnt it seems to be accepted by those who ought to know that it was simply a matter of making a difficult position as pleasant as possible for their daughter and their mutual friends. Arthur Hopkins" next production at the Plymouth Theater will be a new play entitled "Voltaire." In which Arnold Daly will play the part of the French philosopher. It is not a biographical play in lhe usual sense of that phrase, since the action is confined to 21 hours in Voltaire's life. NEW YORK, March 14. School for
Even church architecture is giving way to the business block idea. A seventeen story Hotel with a church occupying part of the first three floors
and a school for missionaries on the fourth is to be erected at Broadway and 104th street within the next few, months according to plans Just an-1 nounced. It Is 10 staml on the site of j
the present Metropolitan Tabernacle and to be taken over by that church when it Is built. It will be more than a church and hotel; it will be a churchhotel. There will be strict supervision of its guests so that the mora tone of life will be assured. Church members will be particularly catered to: cards and dancing are to be prohibited; and general decorum will be pronounced. The Tabernacle is undenominational, but its present pastor is a Presbyterian. Our New Tork City legislators are
proud of their jobs. That's quite ap-j
parent. One of t.hem has lntrooucea a measure to have the state appropriate $7,500 for gold medals to be worn by each state senator and representative. Whether the purpose .behind this effort has psychological connection with the much-worn story about the bootleggers 'having to wear badges to keep from seUins to each other, I don't know. Thrift is not entirely gone from the world or even from this city in spite of the pessimists. Mrs. Mary Giles, a maid employed for many years in the housekeeping department of one of our big hotels .died th other day, leaving an estate of $16,000 and she liad never earned more than $16 a week. The art students of New Tork had a wonderful time the other night when the Society of Illustrators gave them a party. For each Illustrator wore a A Forgotten Art. In New York's streets there may b counted hundreds of signs that read "Watchmaker." Yet perhaps less than a dozen of such concerns could make a watch.

two-year-olds: That is the latest step! In educational system as they are be-' ins developed in New Tork City. Down In Twelfth street Is one of these infants' schools, where eight babies are starting on the Jons road to disciplined learning:. They are not day nurseries; they are really schools. To be sure the babes don't learn the three Fl's; they learn to play, together and by themsel'ves. to take naps at regular hours and without protest, and to begin adjusting: themselves to the ruses of society. Eut it is school just the same. "From Cloak Model to Truckman" is the title of on of Manhattan's own true stories about t'vo of her daughters. Charles It. Woodruff, head of an old Now York trucking: business, had two daughters, whose .beauty had adapted them inevitably to the Job of cloak models Laat month Mr. Woodruf died. The two young girls immediately gave up their mannequin Jobs and betook themselves to the cindery little office down close to an arch of the Brooklyn Bride and started in to run the trucking business. At first It was a bit difficult They were such an Innovation down in that district that rKal truck drivers and the small boys of that region got considerable amusement out of them. Eut Ethel and Charlotte Woodruf have st-uck to It and declare they are going to make it go "I think after awhile people will stop calling Baby' after us," said Ethel, "and then we'll be happy. Brilliant reception parties are planned for the arrival of the S. S. Conte Rosso, the new great liner of the Lloyd Sabaudo company, which will rrach here soon on her maiden voyage. She will be in port a few days before starting on her return trip to her home port. Genoa, and during that time will be the scene of an almost continuous fete. Not only shipping circles here will take part in the welcome to this magnificent liner. but numerous New Yorkers who are interested in any connecting links with Italy or Italian commerce. It Is a luxurious ship, with various innovations for the comfort of the passengers. An open aid restaurant, where more than BOO can dine at the same time, will be used in calm weather for dancing. This will te particularly delightful as the Conte Rosso will use the southern route between New York end Genoa and so there will be many days of calm.
