Fans from throughout the region are in Hammond for tho American legion games. Crown Point has sent a goodly delegation with Otto G. Fifieid. candidate tor treasurer a,a the main cog. Gary with one entry is bragging of taking away the honors while Whiting famous for its great crowd of basketball players .are in hopes of taking the legion trophy. Tho chief topic of conversation in town i3 the basketball tournament and many business men will be on hand today to root for their favorite teams. Politicians from every nook and corner of the county are also here whooping it up for the best team. Out of the thirteen quintets starting in the games today five can be possibly be given the chance of winning the Legion honors. The fiva teams being Gary Works Lichtweights. East Chicago Dodgers. Columbia A. C. of Wet Hammond, Whiiiriff Owl Lights and the Hammond Boorters. There are however whisperings of a few "dark horses'' who are capable of showing great strength but a dark horse seldom reaches the post in a tournament. Uvery team listed has a fighting chance, the weight limit may bother some, out not to a great extent. Indications are that Lake county's young athletes -will give the best that is in the tnand those who turn out to 8e the gainer will see the greatest contests of America's gi'eatest indoor game, Hammond with nine entries stands a good chance of winning first or second place, but none of the local clubs have established any great records this year and th''y will have to play a better biind of basketball than they have shown all season. To the Ameriun Legion and to Irving Chayken who is staging the games it makes no difference who wins. The American Legion is for the youngsters and clean athletics. May the best team win.
