Irish Free State Seen as Breakup in Empire
British Statesmen Beset on All Sides for More Freedom by States. BY DAVID M, CHURCH STATF CORRESPONDENT 1. N. SEHViCEl I.ONIHJN, Mar. 15. Tho eyts of O.re.it liritaln are on Ireland. Ireland's success or failure as a free State may bi: a d item-iining factor in the disintegration of tsntiah rule. Lloyd George and British statesmen are beset on all sides with demands for greater freedom. The creation of the Irish free State has sriven impel u: to demands, which if granted would threaten the strength of British rule in almost enery quarter of tho Klobe. India. Britain's most wealthy Ear East pos'fjel'i, is in tb ethroos of n precipitant revolution with freedom as the cihject i vo. and the Indian problem is 'undoubtedly the knottiest problem Lloyd Georges has on hi hands with the exception of the final settlement of the lrlr.il question n nd his domestic political difficulties. Egypt, a protectorate of Great Britsln, is demanding tvide'r liberties, and the Egyptian question is one which is most vexatious, and it. is whispered in political circles that this problem has threatened cabinet rifts. MIRTH SCOTS HUsTIVll. Scot'.ind has at times been mentioned as the source of a possible demaml for greater independence, although there is at the present time no lnd'cation that the Scottish people will arouse themselves to any serious dePresident Wilson pulling against it. the ill-feeling already engendered between the opposing forces was said to i-e spreading far beyond the senate chamber. Several influential Democratic senators like Harrison of Mississippi were, kno wn to be depreciating the ti i 'e created by the biting criticisms levered at Senator I'ndoiw o"d by many of hi own colleagues. Tiiey wtre unders oo.J to be deploring the probable effect on the approaching congressional campaign of Democrats fighting anions: tneniseives over a treaty proposed by a. Republican administration. Underwood is expected to hold enough Democratic senators in line to assist the Republican majority to ratify the treaty. But one.- the armament conference pacts arc all out of the way it is considered not improbable that a concerted move will he made on the Democratic side to wrest from the Alabama senator hU titular leadership which most of his Democr.Vic colleagues are now refusing to recognize. The known activities of Bernard M. Baruch. former Secretary of the Navy Daniels and other pronounced pro-Wilson men around the senate since the treaty fight began have, it was declared been directed as much against Underwood's leadership, as against the four power past Itself. That the issues raised by the treaty fight will be carried by the Democrats themselves tb the polls this year was believed to be Inevitable, and the declaration of Senator Robinson of Arkansas, a pro-Wilson man who presided over the Democratic convention at San Francisco, that Underwood made a very "grave mistake" when he asked his colleagues to ratify the treaty, was construed as but one indication that Democrats generally are likely to divide on the pact. Resumption of debate on the treaty in the senate found both sides still talking away with little prospect of an immediate vote on ratification, and much prospect of Underwood having to still bear the brunt of the attacks on the treaty for at leant several days to come.
