NOW IS THE TIME TO WIDEN STREETS v livery Hanimcnd citizen will agree that now is the time to widen Hohnian and Fayette streets if they are to be widened at alL Nohting can be gained by delaying an improvement of the kind. It is bound to be more expensive next year than it would be this year because Hammond 1b a growing city and property values are increasing. Is Hammond going to bend to old-fcgeyisra and give way to the barnacles ? Since the widening of Hohnian street was first talked of several years ago half million dollar Improvement has been mande on the west side of the street between State and Sibley, namely, the Parthenon theater. Fortunately the theater la so constructed that a portion of the front can be removed without affecting its. seating capacity. But the damages have become greater, nevertheless, and if the Improvement is delayed a few more yeas they will be even larger than they are now. Every year adds to the cost of widening these streets la the downtown district. Better to widen now tnaa to be forced to widen In ten years. Take the Central school property for Instance. It la appraised at a quarter of a million dollars. We are an Interested in It because it is public property. As taxpayers and patrons of the schools we want the Central school property to be sold at a high value, the revenue from the. sale to be spent In Improving the ec&oola. The Central school property has been offered for Bale a number of times and there have been no bidders. Why are moneyed men afraid of the investment? There
are a halt dcueii uitn iii the city who could buy the pibpeity and write a check for it. Do you suppose they would hesitate if Hohnian street was twenty feet wider? , Not ;t ininut" because if Hohman street was twenty ! leet wider they would feel sure that would always be j the business center of the city. Until it is widened ; there will be a feeling that the business center of the I city will shift east.
The Times wants to see East State street and Calumet avenue grow and become more valuable. But it doesn't want to see Hohman street 1 se out and it believes that the Hohman street property owners should t' made to think this matter over carefully and come to some conclusion. What do you think would happen if The Lion Stcre weie to move to East State street or Calumet avenue? There isn't any doubt about what would happen. Hohman street would start to slipping and never stop until the recognized center of the business district had been established east of the Mcnon, Erie and Nickel Plate tracks. There would be a demand to open Sohl street south to bring trade from the South Hohman street, Olendnle, Kenwood, Hyde Park and Conkeyville district by jitneys, auto bus and pricvate automobiles. Kents will suffer on Hohman street. In fact, the property owners haven't much choice. There are only a few good buildings on the streets. Tenants want better accomodations. Soon better buildings will have to be built and when they are built the cost of widening the street will be almost prohibitive. When the Jones & Laughlin plant builds on the north side it will be a real test of supremacy between Calumet
! avenue and llchman street. The property owners of
Hohman street had better prepare for that test now by widening the street and improving the buildings.

WHAT'S THE IDEA, ANYWAY ? The Hammond city council certainly made a laughing stock of itself in the beer and light wine fiasco. A more idiotic procedure couldn't be imagined. First the council puts aside mere important business and solemnly endorses beer and light wines. What good did that do? Who cares what the Hammond city council think3 about the Volstead law? Then of course came the storm of public disapproval and criticism. The next step was the star chamber session on a Sunday in which a handful cf the aldermen rescinded the action of the former session. It is charged that this meeting is illegal and one of the aldermen promises to bring the matter up at a regular meeting and kill the Sunday proceedure. The whole thing is a tempest in a teapot a silly piece of business and if the Hammond city council has done anything at all It has made Itself supremely ridiculous.
