PLAN FOR AN INTERSTATE PARK IN DUNE COUNTRY FINDS FAVOR
Shall thre bo an Interstate park In the sand-dun country at the south end of Lake Michigan, where the millions of this city and of the Industrial centers to the couth and east may forever possess a breathing spot and recreational ground of singular beauty and wildnesa Tes! Kays Professor Henry C. Cowels of the University of Chicago, and his proposal Is meeting' with -wide approval among the public-spirited men and women who are Interested in seeing this great region saved for the people. And either it must be saved by prompt action now, or the opportunity will forever pae. as the fumes from mills and furnaces will kill the verdure and the very dunes themselves will be
carried away, writes Paul Wright in The News, Chicago. For an Illinois-Indiana Interstate park there is the most puoffiisful of precedents in the Interstate Palisade park that stretches along the, west bank of he Hudson river. In this enterprise the commonwealth of New York and New Jersey have -pera ted in setting aside something like 36.000 acres. ivaking on of the world's must magnificent of p'i lie playgrounds. The Palisnde park is enormously popilir. A similar course cf farstgitted co-operation, s:iys Ir. Cowles, Is needed here. This Jntert.ate-prrk Id. -a U believed to be possible in tself. More than th.it it is be';vcd to be the. only feasible Idea so far devised for trie ncrornp! ;sh-

the action needed. The interstate-park idea however, is in another category. Illinois people. it,1s true, from South Hhcago to Evar.ston and the western suburbs, will profit by the preservation of the district and will enjoy it. but fo, too, will the cit!zen3 of Indiana. Indiana' will Fet aside the land. Illinois will assist with a certain portion of the cost, and both states will be the gainer by the amicable arrangement, nio'i f-.nofl to io.om aches This interstate-park, as concoived In the mind? of its proponents, would be a preat addition to the outdoor attractions of this region and it would be considerably bigger than the state park which Indiana legislators considered. Hoo.Her lawmakers tentatively proposed the making of a 2.000-acre park in Torter county, near Freemont station, north of Chesterton. The interstate-park scheme would embrace from S,000 to 10, COO aTfs of sand-dune wilderness along: the eight or ten mile of shore between Mineral Springs and Furnessville. It is interesting to compare this with the 23,000 acres now In the Cook county forest preserves, and

with the total of 30,000 acrea that will ultimately be available in Cook u;tv The people of Gary, Ind., and of i. ' county in general are in favor of a preserve of the dimensions proposed. Gary is in Lake county. Many of thi citizens of l'orter county, Indiana, where the proposed park will be situateii, wish for a smaller preserve, hoping; to create other great industrial districts there.' However, a small park would not suffice. Many of tha diatlnpuitdiins features of the dunes would be sacrificed, the entire, area would be so small that it would speedily be tramped over and its freshness destroyed, the smoke and dust would injure the urcen life and in consequence the birds and animals would disappear. Already the pines and other trees at RufTinston re beini? killed by the fumes of industrial furnaces. The sand dunes at the head of Lake Michigan and up the east coast are the finest in the world. They are unique, a- are the Grand canyon and the Yellowstone. She bathine beaches alonp the south end of the lake are among the best In the United States, and the city of Chicago has nothing like them. The dune country s attractive in summer, as a matter of course, but it. is also attractive in winter, as some who love the out of doors long- ago discovered. In this respect, the dunes are superior to the Cook county forest preserves, which have their drawbacks in winter. Incident to their clay soil. The sand dunes by their very nature are easily traversible either winter or

Safety for the Auto Owner When you drive a car you are in danger every time the wheels turn. Even a slight injury to a pedestrian, even though it happens through no fault of yours, may cost you more in damages and attorney's fees than the cost of carrying insurance for a lifetime. The car owner should be protected against loss by fire, theft, windstorm, collision or liability for injury to others or their property. Samson insurance offers the needed protection and the cost is reasonable. Let me show you a Samson policy! Dick Broertje3 Agent. 665 South Hohmaa Street
summer, and are always dry under foot. RECREATION FOH AMj CLASSES In the winter months, too, they offer splendid natural facilities for ski races as well as for snowshoens. Since the great dune pageant in 1917 there has been a notable inertase In the pulling power of the dunes. In midsummer nowadays the railroads from Chicago to the region in question run trains consisting of two or three sections of ten or twelve crowded cars each. Under ths interstate-park arrangement the cost of upkeep of the park would be reduced to a minimum. The New York-New Jersey Palisade park makes a small charge for food and transportation and thus pays one-half the cost of upkeep. For the matter of that. Indiana already has a small park at Turkey Run. which Is not In this region, and this park is quite selfsupporting. Orpheus ir. Schantz, president of tha Illinois Audubon Society, one of those in favor of making an interstate-park says: "A visit to almost any "one of the natural parks is a luxury beyond the reach of the majority of the people of the mid3Ie west, but the Lake Michigan
