MINERS ARE
(INTERNATIONAL NEWS 'iERVICEJ INDIANAPOLJS, March S. OITleial.H of the United Mine "Workers are all "hopeful" today that a strike of 'b I luminous coal workers, April 1, may yl be averted. But in the pante breath, they admit ther is little groun.i lor hope that susrenln of oyeva.ticui.i will not ensue 'upon expiration of the prosent wage agreement three wcek.i hnce. "The whole thing rests with the uprators," one union official j.aiit fxlay, explaining that If the mine owners now divided by the refusal of certain ;vjvcrful groups to enter Into negotiations with the miners, once eet Into conference with the intention of consummating an agreement, speedy adjustment can be made and cessation of mining operations avoided. Thus far. however, there has not been the sl'sh'ost indication of any Intention, of the operators to recede from their "stand pat" attitude. "Xo conference." no agreement; no agreement then a strike" was the way President John I Liewis of the mine workers gummed up the situation. Strike ballots is unofficially reported almost unanimously favoring a walkout in April in event a new wage contract Is not effected, continued poring Into union headquarters, but a canvass will not 'be made until Friday, if even then.
SENATE FINDS SLIGHT
GIVEN
BY WAR BUREAU
INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE "WASHINGTON', Mar. 9 The senate has bared Its teeth to the war department over an alleged "s'r'ght" suffered when the Unknown Soldier was buried. The war department, in charge of the runeral parade placed the senate far back in the line of march behind hundreds of clerks and secretaries to bureau heads. The senators brought up the rear of the parade but withheld protests because of the sacredness of the event. The "slight," however, was not forgotten. It was sharply recalled by Senator Ashurst, Democrat, of Arizona, on the floor of the senate. "How can this body expect the reverence of the people when the war department offers us a .slight and we accept It without protest," he said. "We were last In line when the Unknown Soldier was buried. The illustrious body, the elected of the people, was forced to march behind clerks and secretaries. It was an ldignity that made one's blood boil." "Yes, the war department told us to take a back seat," interrupted Senator Robinson, Democrat, of Arkansas. ."This Inocuous body cannot expect to take precedence over the clerks who run the government."
G. D. P. LEADERS DETERMINED TO PASS IT
INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE WASHINGTON, March 9. In the face of the implied warning that President Harding is opposed to the completed soldier bonus bill ,now pending in the house because It does not provide for a sales tax to rai so the nece.'S'sary money. Republican leaders yestercay were determined to pass the measure in Its present form. They do not believe that the president will veto the bill after It gets through congress. It was pointed out that the original bonus requirements of the president were that (1) there should be no reenactment of repealed taxes on excess profits, (2) that the treasury should not be called upon to meet a heavy draft for cash payments, and (3) that interest received on the foreign debt to the United States should not be used. Republican leaders of the house declare that all of these conditions have been met in the present bill, for it takes less than J16,000,000 out of the treasury, levies r.o additional taxes and makes no provision for the use of foreign debt bonds.
