We axe glad to note that tho police authorities of i.4a of tiie wild Texas towns luv determined to stamp :at the terrible evil of dootlao playing that has marred "."tlio morals of 'fae-ir lair city, an J tempted from the ' pat as of rectitude the impressionable seventy- ear-old ' jouths of tho community. But why exempt those other -inta of satan, checkers and authors? Why not get :id of 'em all at oae swoop. Why compromise with, evil? We hae long wondered how professional retermers have been able to let their hands oil dominoes. ;As a device for gambling they are almost as baleful ; f.u their lnSuenee as croquet, and nearly as exciting

s Old JIaid. Aside from that wicked game of par1, we know nothing that will drive a man from
JfcCije to often es a persistent invitation to join his wife jia an evening pame of dominoes. 'XI Texa baa setj the pace. Let the good work go on, End efter the domino evil has been cured perhaps the authorities win turn their attention to putting the baseball 13 out of business, cleaning up the 'poolrooms. REFUNDING ALLIED DESTS. Democratic senators" criticise Presiuent Harding's selections lor membership of the allied debt refunding commission only because one of their own refunding faith waa net included. They are wise enough not to question the qualifications of Messrs. llughes, Mellon, Hoover, Smoot and Burton. It would be interesting to receive from them a lint of Democrats, any one of whom may be substituted for one of the Republicans to the improvement of the commission. There is no place in the refunding operations for mere politics. It Is business of a serious kind and the character of the live appointees gives assurance that
! partisan politics will not enter into their consideration
of it. Responsibility for making the best possible arrangements rests on the administration. It cannot be shirked. This is sufficient reason for tho president's selection of five men In whom he and the country can repose absolute confidence. Those who believe that the funding commission will devise a process for early discharge ot their obligations by our war debtors are going to be disapalntedv An indication of the difficulties they will encounter is Riven in the news that Great Britain, the most capable linancially of the debtors, contemplates making In the near future only a relatively small cash payment on
account of over-due interest and that she will tender
bonds in an amount not to exceed $1,000,000,00, whereas she owes us approximately $5,000,000,000 Oihers will be able to do less. But the commission is not In fact a collecting body. Its business will be to make some arrangement
for repayment which will enable our government to appraise these claims. That being done, we can g'
ahead more confidently with our own financing. How blow actual collection, will be any American may calculate from a reasonable conclusion as to the length of time It will take the United States government to retire
all of its indebtedness, not forgetting that this country
can raise more money by taxation than anv other.

The wwe attitude was expressed in his ; res to the senate presenting: the conference treai V:- When he had finished, it will be recalled, the president was given warm personal greetings by senators on the democratic side of the chamber. SETTER TIMES IN SIGHT. In the United States the farmers' buying capacity
and inclination uiways hava been regarded as the
barometer of business. The recent depression was due in large part to unfortunate econcmlc conditions which in the process ot reconstruction deflated the farmers' prices first. When R, 000,000 Industrious, t-table peo
ple suddenly tlnd their property decreasing in value
their income curtailed and their lliture doubtful, the effect upon all the business of tho country can not but
bo depressing.
For the earne reasons the reviewers of business are watching with keen Interest the recent higher
movement in prices of stable farm products. Wheat has
shown encouraging appreciation. To be sure, the bulk
of the wheat crop or the past year Is now out of tho hands of the farmers, and there is r.o assurance that the recent bulge in the wheat market will be sustained past the season, of harvest. But encouragement is good. As a cause of hard times the general frame of mind is always" a potent factor. In the case of corn, however, there is cause for very definite encouragement. The crop of last year was enormous, and, because of the exceptionally low prices. Is still in "V hands of the farmers to verv laree ex-
