The witnesses told the police they rushed into the room and found the two fugitives standing: with drawn revolvers over the body of Cascio who had been shot through the heart..

tian. wbo was compelled to leave Great Britain because he had the moral courage to preach tbe TAith. The benevolent spirit of St. David is further illustrated in the life, acts and deeds of another illustrous son of Cambrian origin, William Penn. No two men have contributed more in paving the way for American freedom than these two men, -whoa patriotis was kindled at the altars of the early Britons. "From the day Captain Jones landed the Pilgrim Fathers who came over on the Mayflower the AVelsh have been dominant factors in the development of America. As Senator John Sharp Williams stated in the Senate. "No nation, in proportion to its population, has contributed more to the civil, religious and industrial development of America than the Welsh. And this statement is based tn facts, as attested in the part tho Welsh people played in those days that tried men's souls the Revolutionary days. The man who wrote the Declaration of American Independence Thomas Jefferson, but reiterated the quintessence of what St. David preached in the sixth century when ho declared that 'rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God.' His an

cestors, who breathed the re'.lgiou freedom of Wilea in the very shadow I of the mighty Snow-don, transplanted the seed to Virginia. Like the cedar of Libanus of old. its roots scattered and enlivened themselves aiound the everlasting Hock of Ages. which weathered all storms, and proclaimed 'Liberty throughout the land unto p.li the inhabitants thereof."

' Whiie the author of this iinmor;a' document was a man v.-ho boasted oi his Cymric ancestry, it is a matter of record, as verified in documents in Independence Hall, that l.c was but on of sevteen men of Welsh blood who signed the Declaration of Independence, and I challenge any nation produce so pr:vud a. record. Time w in not permit me to enumerate all. lur we must mention John Hancock, wh presided at the convention when tin Declaration of Independence was proclaimed. Samuel and John Adam:-. Francis Lewis, Stephen Hopkins and William Williams, Iw is Morris. John Penn. the three delegates from New York State, and that valiant patrioi from Pennsylvania. Robert Morris, who

placed his fortune on tho altar of free, do mthat the fires of liberty might no, be quenched. George Washington puniicly pr-jcla im :4 his- gratitude to Kohert Morris, and in the dark days of tin Revolutionary war was his most (. -tent aide. Wiien the, hc!f-starved patriots at Valley Forge were almost famished, their clothing; in tatters and their unshod fitt crimsoning in tl.f snow with their blood, it -was Robert Morris, who was permitted to die the poor house, that rescued the almost perishing patriots with his private fortune. It is ccrtainl ygratifyin: to learn that at l.st an ungrateful Republic is about to pay a worthy homage to this great financier, patriot au l philosopher, and valiant son of St David, by erecting a monumet-i t-. commemorate his valiant deeds. "In the revolutionary army Wales i.worthily represented by fourteen Generals and seven Colonels, the most worth of whom was 'mad Anthoriv Wayne,' who captured Stony Point by storm and filled the countr with j and admiration. He lies buried at St. David's Church, within seventeen miles of Independence Hall, but I question whether a worth monument enshrouds the sacred spot where he sleeps. Dr. John Morgan, the founder of ih Philadelphia Medical School, -was sur-(feon-in-chief of the American army and among the chaplains who look--after tho spiritual welfare of the soldiers were three Welsh divines. lbw many Welshmen were in the rank and

j file of the army is conjectural. And

ve can ves: assured that the land tin: fostered rieei'oijj for ags contribute! its i.uota. iMiU were found were lb!!hlin -us he-? test, and to their ev i -la-tii.; credit it may be said that lii--ny d". s not "cc-rd that one of il' i, ever j roved a traitor. "From these early colonial day.down to the present day Welshmer have been anting the foremost factor; in the industrial development ' A me i ica. especially coal, iron, steel, ti aid slates. They are pioners in JiH these and tlie ntmes of many of them are forever engrossed In the country's history, in agriculture they were also successful, as Illustrated in the nja.ny farming communities they established. They were among the first to cross the Allegheny Mountains, ar.d the first w'llte child born west of the Allegheny Mountains was a little Welsh gu. ntnied Jones, who first sa wthe light of day in a log cabin along the banks of the Ohio River. "Descendants of our good old patriarch have also cccupied the presidential chair at Washington, including Jefferson, Adams, Monroe, Harrison Lincoln and Garfield. Despite that Washington, 'tho father of. his country.' occupied a singularly warm soot in the heart of America, it is a de.bat able question whether the warmth oi the admiration exceeds that shown toward the great emancipator. Abraham Lincoln, who was Welsh on his mother's side. Our veneration for this great and illustrious exponent of liberty and freedom Is like good wine, it improves with sge. Ho was a, muchmaligned man in his day and hi.--enemies were numberless. Like lh Rock of Gibraltar, he stood surrounct ri when conscience dictated that man despite his color, was created in the image of his creator, and as such wav privileged' to enjoy that he-avenly birth-right, freedom. Search where ycu will the world does not reveal his equal as an sxponent of true civic and religious liberty. Though killed by an assassin's bullet, the spirit of this man among men, like that ot old St, David, still live, and Is an incentive to you and I to emulate his example and to cultivate that spirit of fairness and freedom that best reflects the Godgiven heriage to mankind. "Should we be permitted to deal with the present statemen and diplomats of the tresent day we might refer to one who Is destined to pla ya conspicuous part in the next administration Charles Evans Hughes, the ex-presS-dent of the St. David's Society of NewYork and th eson of a Welsh clergyman whom some of you, perhaps, hav heard in the Welsh chtirches of Pennsylvania, and who preached in my native city Tt edejar. He is also imbued with that spirit of fairness tinfreedom that characterizes him as it man of keen and sound judgment, and

with him at Lhe heim out ship of stale will be in safe hands for at least four years. Before closing let us refer to on more son of -'gallant little Wales' that is today perhaps the foremost defender of the faith of his fathers Premier D. Lloyd' George, w hose unyielding courage in the darkest days of the late bloody war has saved the freedom and civilization of the worm. Emerging from a remote little village in North Wales, reared like Abraham Lincoln, amid poverty and privation, when half an egg on Sunday was a feast to him. schooled in his youihful days by the village shoemaker and acquainted with the grief that was the lot of those wno were at the mere of the merciless and arrogant landmaster, he has climbed by sheer force to a position that dethroned despots and makes kings tremble with fear. Though he wields a mightier sceptre than that of a h ing, he. like the great emancipator that lie patterns after, finds his greatest solace among the common people from which he was mo Bled. Like Lincoln of old, when perplexed witlvproblems of world-wide importance he finds his greatest relaxation, not among- the glittering throngs that congregate in palaces, but In an tscure little AVelsh church imnns those who have kept the religious fires burning for ages, where his sonorous voice blends with the common masses

in singing those glorious Welsh hymns that proclaim to the world that freedom of conscience and liberty of speech that is the heritage of freeborn people. As long as Wales continues to rear sons of the caliber of this modern son of St. David, freedom will nev-r perish, for he embodies, as no other

does, the attributes thru contribute toward the making of a life that is worth living. "The chariot of progress, though assailed by foes within as well as from without, moves forward and overcomes all obstacles. Encompassed by foes and criticized by venomous enemies, he still, in the language of "Mad Anthony Wayne." 'holds the, fort.' Perliapa some day distorians will appraise him at bis tin worth, and wnen they dx be will bo adjudged the most spectacular figure of this age. In a world strewn with wreck-, when thornes crumble and empires quake, he points his index finger to that port here only sa r.-t refuge is found, and, if spared, he Mill weather all storms and eventually lnd the ship of state in safe harbor.
