the first time, a short poem suitable for music, a melody Immediately suggested itself to him. The music for "Hark! Hark! The Lark" from Shakespeare's tragedy. "Cymbeline" was written In a tavern on the hastily ruled music staff on the back of the bill of fare. Besides seven hundred songs Schubert wrote an immense quantity of other types of music. "March Militalre" is probably the best known of his seven marches. Mendelssohn's "Elijah" which ranks
with Handel's "Messiah," was written for the Birmingham, England Festival. "If With All Your Hearts" Is a famous solo from this iwork. The "Overture to Midsummer Nights Dream." opens with four prolonged chords . from the woodwlned choir, then follow these picturesque features: tripping of fairies, romantic theme of lovers, dance of tradesmen, comic braying of a donkey and the play of elves. The' composition logically closes with the four chords heard at the beginning of the piece. Every amateur pianist Js familiar with Mendelssohn's "Songs Without Words" of which the "Spring: Sons" Is an universal favorite. Although the French, composer, Jodard, has left a large number of works, they are generally unknown outside his own country, excepting- the lovely "Buccuse" from his opera "Jocelyn." and this Is so deserving It should be known by everyone.
