The literature department of the, Hammond Woman's Club iri-t with Mrs. Harvey 'lostlin yesterday afternoon in her home on South Hobman street and the ladles enjoyed an excellent study hour. Mrs. Edith Griffin read a paper on "The School for Scandal'" by Richard lirinsley Sheridan. Sheridan was a member of a distinguished family of actors, which at one time was prominent and wealthy. However (he author died a pauper at the age e-f sixty-rtlve. Mr?. ('rifTin In her usually interesting manner gave a brief but comprehensive outline of the play. reading extracts from the amusing matrimonial arguments of "Sir F'eter" and "Lady Teasle." "The School for Sca.no-. " a fitting example of English mannerisms, is haid to be the most successful of the writer's plays. Mrs. H. Sheridan sweetly Miis "Jean" by Burleigh and "Friend of Mine" by Sanderson, to the accompanf mnt of Miss Ella Fisher. The second part of the program was the play "The Servant in the House" by Charles Pann Kennedy. Mrs. Harnit read an excellent paper on this p'ay. written by Mrs. Leslie Carter, who was The author Kennedy was practically unknown 111 American literary circle ei until presentation of this play hi Now York in The poeite beauty o' the language, tho dramatic art and religions merit, combined with a unique story, made frr a play both elevating and attractive. Mrs. Harnit gave a splendid review of tiie hook bringing out the symbolic significance of the thre 1 distinct types of characters. Kennedy not only upholds the big "brotherhood'' idea, but glorifies labor and brinsrs religion into its essential relation with man. The mfetmg adojurned, to meet again at tha home of Mrs. E. A. Uilson of Forest avenue. The Woman Auxiliary of the American Legion will. meet tomorrow evening in Room Three of the court house.

At the dinner table a number of toa?t was givn. after which a patriotic program was enjoyed, including a piano solo by Mrs. Lillian Mikesch, an address hy Rev. John C. Parrett on "Abraham Lincoln" and one by Rev. J. C. Granger on "George Washington." Mrs. L. L. Bornberger sang a pleasing- number, and a delightful reading wsb gtven by jMiss Evelyn Parker. Mrs. V. Schohl sang and Mrs. R. R. Rowley gave a reading. There were a number of Roy Scouts in attendance, who gave a drill that v,-hm jyeatly appreciated, and the depsrtrnent president, la behalf of the corp presented the boys with a beautiful fag. Thia meeting was one of the most cnjoyafcle and best attended ever given by the corps.

Misjj Ethel Nowalt of Henry street delightfully entertained thi members of tha M. T. Club last evening in he' home. A most njoyable evening . spent with muaic and games, and bunco was played at three tables. Honors were made by Miss tiOuise Krumrei and Miss Marie k'uhl. The hosteaa served a delicious course luncheon to the eleven guests, and the club will meet in two weeks at the home of Miss Freda PeXloIf of Highland street. The Juntor Claims of the high school last night enjoyed a delightful George Washington party in th" beautifully decorated gymnasium of the Kenwood school. Including vocal numbers by Miss Helen Grant and Misa Reatrice Hobbs, and a pretty toe dance by Miss Violet Milne was greatly enjoyed by the guests.
