Be prompt in ad v ism us vhen you up not set your paper and we will act promptly PAYING THE BONUS. President Harding will have the country back of htm in his demand that soldiers' bentis legislation 6-haIl provide for raising the money necessary to pay It. The only argument for any bonus is that the men are entitled to something additional to what they received during their terms of military service. It would be a mockery of patriotism were congress to hand them an "I. O. U." that could not bo cashed This would be done were it left to the president to pet the money where he could. The president cannot raise revenue. That is the function of congress. To provide that bonus payments shall be made oat of interest received from fom-ign governments on their war indebtedness to the United States would not be right or satisfactory. It is very questionable if wo shall receive anything frcm this source for many years. We cannot count on anything, as concress well knows. That a bill is pending, and probably will be passed, creating a commission to fund the foreign war debut, evidences understanding at the capital that there must be an extension of credit in some fcrm to our associates in the war whose operations we bo largely financed. Every consideration of gcod faith requires that specific provison for payments be made in the bonus bill. Some new fcrm of taxation will have to be davised. That is what makes congress hesitate. But the bonus proposition meets with popular approval.
TEE ROAD TO SUCCESS Down in Nashville, Tenn., is a Negro, 67 years old, who runs an elevator in a department? store. Amusing himself during his leisure hours by manipulating some old wire from baled hay, he conceived the idea of fashioning 5t into a rat trap. The trap worked so well that he won a rat-catching competition held by the Commercial Club of that city. New he has been offered 25,000 cash for the patent rights or $5,000 down and Ave cenu royalty on every trap sold. All of this goes to prove the truth of the epigram of Elbert Hubbard, afte: incorrectly attributed to Kmerson: "If a man write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mouse-trap than his neighbor, though he build his home in the woods, the world will -make a beaten path to his door." Conditions were not propitious for the attainment of even a modest fortune by the Nashville Negro. Having l'otulhti'j the age of 57 without having advanced to any higher position than that of an elevator operator, he generally would have been regarded as one to whom no more opportunities would come. The story of his case should be an inspiration to ambitious persons to whom success has not yet come. When one considers the countless things used by the human race, and the ccuntlsss things in which mankind is interested, it seems as though nearly every person, if he chose wisely and applied himself to it, could effect an improvement on at least one of that vast number and so win the world's homage.

ACQCMTING A DOG of the killing of a cat, a San Francis,, judge has ruled that cats should stay at home and not run the risk of encountering their enemy. Does this ruling apply to cat concerts on the back yard fence in the middle of the night? If so, we're for it.
