Political News of Day In Indiana
TIKIS UEAU AT STATE CAPITAL INT IAN A.PO LOS. Dec. 6. WiCh a mpocitd aesslon of the General Aa. erably only a tfew daya off, Senator Harry 8. New In Indianapolis turning Ter every political atone possible to solidify hJs chances for re-nomlnatlon next year, and the Democratic state committee damonstnUlng some signs of life, there ha been enough politics la Indianapolis during the last wak to aatisfy even a Hooaler. Out of thle boiling; pot of plans and peculations Where arises three absorbin C questions. The first of ttaeee is i question political leaders have been trying" to answer for months and wthioh is now taking; on added significance beoauae of the preaence of Scnvtor'Neiw. "Will Albert J. Beverldge toocn a cemdldat for the senate? The seoottd question Is whether thin em bare of the legislature will limit Chair activities at the special session to the consideration of the reformatory bill. 'While these two question are attracting- spotlights of equal bril'laiwry the third question Is holding the Interact of a smaller group, and this l who will he ohoaen aa Breaker mt the house of representative en the lgt ot Dec. it. Senator New rtlll hopes that he will eet have opposition for the re-noroina-ion. K feet that hie service to the party during the last forty years entitle him to this consideration . Yet. he doe not hesitate to declare that he W.I eves he will have opposition. Earlier In th yesur the forces back f Senator New had considered openrng state headquarter not later than this month . It wa thought that Mr. Xvrldc would have made public hlf srtan-d on the senatorsh'p race by this time. Hi continued stlenc has made It unnecessary for th New (forces to Initiate a publio campaign. Bom word from Ex-Scnator BeverMgs fa expected by political leaders Within a fortnight. A maw stadia portrait of Miss Alex Stirling and (Inset) a glimpse f her as golf enthusiasts know her. Miss Alexa Stirling, several times woman's golf champion, is now planning: to match her skill against that of men and women in another field. She has entered the banking business, having joined the bond department of the S. W. Straus & Co. of New York. Miss Stirling, daughter of a prominent physician of Atlanta, Ga., won the national championship three years in succession and several other section title.
been thrown on the subJot by Senator New. One ye-ar ago, the senator relates, when there was some talk of film aecepttaifr a plare in the Harding cabinet. Mr; Wood mad a personal request to be Informed on th subject. "X tol(l Mr. Wood that I would not accept any such federal place should it be offered to me." Senator Nw said, "and also told him I intended to seek re-nomination. At that time Mr. Wood declared he would not only not oppose me. but would work for me. He did say. however, that If I was not a candidate he possibly would take a liffeirent course." Dewpite the feeling of confidence expressed by Sentaor ?ew there continues to be a rrt deal of talk about
the Lafayette man getting into the
confcest In the event Mr. Bervertdge or some other person enters the race. In regard to th senatorshlp announcement of Governor McCray that he will support Mr. New is possibly the one outstanding development of the week. It has been known right along that the Governor would support the senator, but heretofore., he has not made any publio announcement of the fact. Friends of Judse Arthur R. Robinson, of Indianapolis, had hoped that the governor would give the judge hla backing because of the friendship existing between them. At first it was believed the announcement of the gov
ernor would result in Judge Robinson declining to run, but It develops he Is still considering the matter. The talk Is now current that Judge Robinson Is merely watting to 6ee whether Mr. Beveridne will run. In event the exsenator decides to stay out It Is possible that Judge Robinson may take a fling at the nomination. He served in the world war and would expect support from service men.
The newspaper report that Mr. R1oh ard E. Edwards, of Peru, may become a candidate for tht senatorshlp nomination Is riot being taken seriously in political circles. In fact the possibility of her candidacy Is not even being discussed. As the tim approaches for possible candidates to make announcements it develops that they realize that I "lator New is an excellent campaier and has earned the support of his party organization. The realize he would be a hard man t teat. Or cour?e, no man desires to make a race If he feels confident he can not win. Possibly it is tht uncertainty which Is causing possible aspirants to hesitate to splash Into the waters.
